Does anybody else get a very specific feeling when playing Source maps?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 02:37 PM PST

If I load up an old mod or Gmod map I always get the same feeling. It is difficult to describe; it's almost like a feeling of uncanniness, surrealness, even melancholy. I've seen other people describe similar feelings. It doesn't matter what you play. From CSS, HL2, Portal and L4D, to every custom map and mod ever made for these games, the feeling is there. There's something so innately surreal or--dare I say--spooky about the Source engine that even simple maps inherit this theme. Has anyone else noticed this?

I would love to know what causes it. It could be that it's left over from when Mark Laidlaw was thinking about making a more surreal experience. Maybe the realistic-but-not-realistic look of the engine gives us an uncanny valley vibe. Maybe the mix of LQ sounds from the HL2 beta and newer HD sounds helps to remind your brain that it's all fake, but not enough to break the immersion entirely. Perhaps it's just childhood nostalgia.

I have been thinking about starting a YouTube series where I would talk about these old maps and mods because they fascinate me so much. I would explore the maps, try to find any easter eggs, talk about any interesting technical stuff, and maybe even contact the mappers for interviews. Would anyone here watch a series like this?

    City-17 [Grand Project]

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 02:08 PM PST

    City-17 [Grand Project]

Hello everyone! We present to you - City-17 [Grand Project].

We are building a map from the legendary game Half-Life 2. Construction is carried out since 28.02.2016.

The map is an open world Half-Life 2.

The map is constructed under RP, which is the ability to enter many buildings (residential, commercial, industrial).

Also on the map there are dungeons, secrets and easter eggs.

But even the fact that this RP map, then there will be a storyline to Nova-Prospekt. And so will the storyline HL2:EP1 and HL2:EP2, as well as Borealis will not come out of HL3. We even plan to make not only a canyon with Borealis, but also a small Arctic island, which we can get from The White Forest.

Also in City-17 there are streets from the original game, but they are all built in a scatter, so the storyline you will not be able to pass. But since the map RP, the city is full of many streets, most of which are maps of Garry's Mod.

Just at the other end of the sea will be a village of HL2:LC. And in the middle of the sea, there will be an island from MINERVA: Metastasis.

The Citadel is fully equipped for RP, but it has several plot locations (office, dark energy reactor, core and hall with advisers)https://www.planetminecraft.com/project/city17-grand-project-half-life-2-map/

Black Mesa Theme Park. Need ideas

Black Mesa Theme Park. Need ideas

In my engineering class we are working on a theme park layout project and i chose half life as my theme. The problem is that most of Black Mesa is inside and makes for a very claustrophobic park. I am thinking about expanding the topside area but I'm not sure what to put there. Does anyone have any ideas on what a Black Mesa theme park might look like? I have plans to make the electric rails a ride but I'm not sure what else, maybe a drop ride with the tentacle in Blast Pit . Should i do half life 2 instead? I feel like that would make for a very depressing theme park. I'm kinda starting to consider changing the theme to something else.

My take on "Half-Life 3" , the future of Half-Life, and why VR is the next step.

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 12:44 PM PST

Back when "Half-Life: Alyx" came out a lot of people - including myself - were disappointed that it was VR, but it make sense why it would be and why (if and when) HL3 comes out it will most likely be VR or on another evolution of gaming product.

Let's go to November 19, 1998, when HL1 was released to the public. At the time video games were, at a development standpoint, virtually all the same. This is what Half-Life wanted to break. While Valve's following was small, HL1 was a massive hit to the company and later the world. In just two months HL1 sold 212k units, earning $8.6 million in the states alone. In 1999 it was the 5th best-selling game in the US and third best in the UK.

Many major critics claimed that Half-Life was an game-defining era. The reception Half-Life got was that it was, as IGN puts it, "one of the most influential video games, saying that the history of the FPS genre 'breaks down pretty cleanly into pre-Half-Life and post-Half-Life eras'".

The same followed after the release of Half-Life 2, where critics applauded the game and cited the advanced graphics and physics, calling it the "best game ever made". What really sold critics and gamers alike was Half-Life 2's popularity was the advanced graphics and physics engine. This was a catalyst in the future development of video game engines and design.

What Half-Life 1 and Half-Life 2 have in common is that they are both considered very influential and significant advanced compared to other games that came out during their time periods, effectively becoming "eras" in video game history.

This is what leads me to believe what Valve is trying to do with Half-Life 3; Valve wants HL3 to be their third and most likely final era in video game history. They want HL3 to live up to it's predecessors, and the only way to do that is to follow in their footsteps and develop the third game to be a pivotal change in how we see and play games.

This is why HL3 hasn't come out yet and Half-Life: Alyx has. They're using HL:A as a "test", to see people are actually as interested in VR as they want us to be. As VR isn't a system that many people need or use, I highly doubt HL:A to be a large success, but maybe in the future as people's lives start to depend on it the same way we do with computers, Valve might release it soon, being yet another catalyst into the future of tech and game development.

If something isn't clear to you please write a comment, I just woke up for a hangover and my brain is working extremely slowly. I'd like to hear your sides in the comments as well.

What jobs do the humans under control of the Combine have during the events of Half-Life 2?

    Half-Life location?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 10:45 AM PST

sorry if this is dumb or has been asked before but I'm wondering about the location of the Half-Life games. I know Black Mesa facilities are in New Mexico and City 17 and surrounding areas are set in Eastern Europe. So did the G-Man transport Gordon there after he pulled him out of stasis? How did Isaac, Eli, Barney and the rest of the Black Mesa team get there? Did they flee after the Resonance Cascade? Sorry if this is an annoying question I just love this game and I want to know more about it.
