A note about Operation Black Mesa (Opposing Force Remake)

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 03:01 PM PST

So, as you know, there's a remake in the works for Opposing Force called Operation Black Mesa by a team named Tripmine Studios, which are also in charge of Guard Duty the Blue Shift remake, the team seems to be focused and doesn't lack talent, as you can see in their artworks and the awesome job they did with the weapons modelling and animations.

Just like Black Mesa for HL, this remake is supposed to be reimagining rather than a straight faithful remake, which is good, and also necessary, porting an old HL game to Source means a lot of things have to change, the inclusion of physics alone makes the game completely different as you can witness in Black Mesa, so all in all, it's open to new ideas, and i have one that is, i think interesting, just thing about it, The Barnacle weapon !!

The Barnacle weapon was a really cool weapon in OpFor, but i found it kinda lacking context to be used, it only used as a grapple in some situations and also it's semi-melee weapon that a lot of people not use at all for a a lot of reasons, but what if you add physics to it ? What if you make it HL2 Barnacle ?

Let me explain myself, in some audio log in OpFor, a scientist said that the creature/weapon can only hook to organic surfaces, which is true... In HL1 !! In HL2 the barnacle EATS organic things, but can grab a lot of non organic materials so :

    - I love to see the Barnacle used as a special weapon like the gravity gun, which can grab crates, ammo, items, barrels, that are out of reach, and help solve puzzles, just make the aforementioned audio log vanish as it's not making any sense in Source Era HL games.

    - Also, what if the weapon can grab small enemies like headcrabs and eat them instead of hooking to them and take the player straight to the enemy's face to eat it ??

That would make the weapon a lot more interesting, while also connecting better to the "updated" lore from the Source Era.

I want to know what you think about that, excuse my english gentlemen, i'm not a native english speaker

Are there any modern retro shooters in the style of Half-Life 1?

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 02:22 PM PST

Obviously we've been in a golden age for old school FPS over the last few years, with games like Dusk, Ion Maiden, Devil Daggers, etc.

But these games are all in the style of Doom/Quake/Duke Nukem/Blood.

Are there are modern retro shooters more in the style of Half-Life? Like something a little more story driven, with level design that is less abstract, more scripted events, etc.?

(I played all the games in this style that came in Half-Life's wake as they came out, so I'm specifically looking for a modern throwback. I've also played pretty much every major Half-Life single player mod already.)
