Replaying Half-Life(Via Black Mesa), the sheer size of the Black Mesa Research Facility is nuts. Posted: 10 Mar 2020 05:54 AM PDT I've replayed HL1 a lot in the past, probably 4-5 times. It has been a long time since have, since the 2012 release of the BM Mod, I decided to wait since I had already experienced it so many times. Playing it now. Just wow. The sheer scale of the the BMRF is crazy when you think about it. The rooms, the areas you visit, just all the machinery and people. I really miss this oldschool FPS design. It really captured that feeling that Half-Life 1 and Half-Life 2 have where is a "scale" to your journey. A world that you are venturing through. I can't help by stand in awe of Valve's original design of the facility. It was so revolutionary in 1998, and I say, sadly, still so in 2020. We've regressed so far in FPS map design. "Open World" games feel so much smaller than this. There are large sections where nothing happens in Half-Life, where you visit places for maybe some ammo or just really exists because...well it should exist. Modern FPS games just cut out everything not related to where you need to go. This makes building atmosphere difficult. As everything feels like a set piece. Not a world. It's kinda sad, like Jim Sterling said in a video, that the most anticipated games in 2020...are almost all remakes or remasters of 20 year old games. (Halo, Half-Life, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy 7 ect). [link] [comments] |
