    Vortigaunt Hieroglyphs Deciphered Part 2

    Posted: 17 Apr 2020 03:51 PM PDT

    Continuation from Part 1!

    Piece 5:

The centerpiece of the installation: Gordon Freeman

At the far end of the tunnel we are confronted by this large drawing showing Grodon Freeman in the antimass spectrometer at Black Mesa (see here for comparison: https://half-life.fandom.com/wiki/Anti-Mass_Spectrometer ).To the left of the bottom clasps one can still make out the delivery cart and its lift, watched by two eyes (probably representing Eli and Dr. Kleiner, who let Gordon into the chamber via retina scans. In the middle floats Gordon in his HEV suit being hit by bems of radiation, possibly in the act of involuntarily teleporting to various Xen locations (see HL1). He is falsely epicted as already being armed with the iconic crowbar. At the top sit the three rotating electro-magnetic field emitters. The whole piece is surrounded by three Black Mesa logos.Again I must admit: I don't know what the right most eye represents, possibly Dr. Magnus or a similar bystander?

    Piece 6:

    Tentacles and Houndeyes

All the way to the left we see a Xen Tentacle (recognizable by its antennae and characteristic dent in the head) in the Blast Pit of HL1 (deducibel from the surrounding ladders, crates and the deep well below), right next to what might either be a second tentacle, or a juxtaposed crowbar. The the right we see 2 Houndeyes emitting noise.

    Piece 7:

    The Nihilanth and Alien Controllers

In the battle sequence in the Nihilanths chamber, Gordon kills multiple Alien Controllers and ultimately the Nihilanth itself. This is represented by their eyes crossed out and the opened Nihilanth head and exposed brain being crossed out by the iconic crowbar. One can even make out that the Nihilanths middle arm is only stitched on, as shown in HL1 (see here: https://half-life.fandom.com/wiki/Nihilanth )

    Piece 8:

    Celebrating Vortigaunts

By killing the Nihilanth, the Vortigaunts are freed, represented here by the bursting of their shackles and neckcollars. (Though technically some of them are still imprisoned and enslaved by the Combine). Here the three detached "arms" and headless eye from piece 3 (see Part 1) appear again.

    Piece 9:

    The destruction of the Citadel

The final depiction of events shows one from the future. While HL: Alyx plays even before the citadel is even fully built, in this picture it is already succesfully destroyed, implying (again) that Vortigaunts can perceive time non-linear. Standing next to the Citadel is Eli Vance, recognizable by his leg prosthetic and Gordon Freeman in his HEV Suit (although it isn't too similar to his first depiction in piece 5 and could thus be a different member of the former Black Mesa staff or current Black Mesa East fellowship. For example Barney, Dr. Kleiner or Alyx who were all at Black Mesa during the incident and are now a part of Black Mesa East). To the right stands a Vortigaunt, likely a self-insertion by the artist. At the top of the Citadel the exposed and bloated Dark Fusion Reactor is covered triumphantly by a hand holding (again) the iconic crowbar, symbolizing the (almost) destruction of the Citadel at the end of HL2.

This is the last piece of the "Tunnel Epos", but there are more hidden drawings that I will show in Part 3. Thx for reading.

Vortigaunt Hieroglyphs Deciphered (Part 1 of 3)

    Posted: 17 Apr 2020 03:00 PM PDT

The story told via these pictogramms goes as follows:

    Piece 1:

Vortigaunt community tending to their Antlion hive

Here we see 3 Antlions in their hive, their "honeycombs" partially occupied by what looks like larvae or laval extract. Below 6 Vortigaunts (and a 7th very faint in the lower left corner) collecting said larvae or larval extract in a pile. It seems like three Vortigaunts are tending to an injured fourth (reminiscent of three Vortigaunts tending to the injured Alyx in HL2 Ep2)

As we know from HL2 Ep2 "This Vortal Coil", Vortigaunts have long since practiced the art of farming the larval extract from their Nectarium ( https://half-life.fandom.com/wiki/Half-Life_2:_Episode_Two_storyline ), reflected by the fact that the antlion grubs can be used as for healing (squishing them in HL2 Ep2, the green goo in HL2 first-aid-kits and HLA syringes, and of course at healing stations).

    Piece 2:

Vortigaunts under attack by the Combine

This drawing shows us 3 Combine Dropships in approach, one of them dropping of humanoids. 3 Strideras surround a group of 5 Vortigaunts, taking them under fire and killing 2. We also see what looks like 3 Alien Aircraft (aka "Manta Rays" from HL1). This is interesting, as we now know, that the two alien species that became the basis for the Dropship Synth and the Strider Synth have been overthrown before the Vortigaunts were. Also Combine have access to Alien Aircraft and Humanoid Soldiers. Note: at this point in time Earth hasn't even been attacked yet, where do these humanoids come from? Are they the original Combine Race? (As we found out via the Breengrub Twitteraccount, the Shu'ulathoi are but another subdued and synthed-up alien race, incorporated into the Combine empire by defeating them via a telepathetic virus. See here: http://lambdageneration.com/discussion/half-life/5-intriguing-things-breengrub-teaches-us-about-the-half-life-saga/ ).

    Piece 3:

    Vortigaunts enslaved by the Nihilanth

Now we are shown the consequences of the Combine attack: The Vortigaunts are enslaved and under the rule of the Nihilanth. One can recognize the green shackles Vortigaunts wore in HL1. We know that the Nihilanth encountered in HL1 is the last (free one) of its kind, who unsuccesfully fled to Xen from the Combine (The Nihilanth telepathically tells Gordon that they "are their slaves" referring to their own kind).
Considering the lack of a stitched on third arm (see here: https://half-life.fandom.com/wiki/Nihilanth ), this seems to be a different Nihilanth under Combine control, made to force the Vortigaunt to work, possibly in the Weapon-/ Synthfactory on Xen.
This Combine assimilated Nihilanth seems to subdue the Vortigaunts by telepathically penetrating their vortessence (the Vortigaunt hivemind) as depicted by the beams emitted from its head. The center Vortigaunt is crying.Note the vortigaunt eyes and hands to the far left, seemingly free.

    Piece 4:

The Gonarch spewing forth tiny Headcrabs

Floating at the very top is a part of the Xen Borderworld (the platforming puzzle from HL1 if you will) and below is the Gonarch, a fully matured "Queen"-Headcrab spewing forth tiny baby Headcrabs. They are sourounded by Xen funghi and light stalks.I must admit that I cannot make out what the lines-and-dots formation right below the Xen Borderworld is supposed to be, possibly the underground tunnels or healing pools?

Thx for reading, see Vortigaunt Hieroglyphs Deciphered Part 2 for more.

Ngl, I thought that one bit of Combine chatter near the end of Chapter 5 of Alyx was creepy af.

    Posted: 17 Apr 2020 08:39 AM PDT

After the Northern Star where you're going through the building filled with tripmines, and then outta nowhere they go from usual shooty-maguffin-military-talk, to dead quiet, just the banging of a door and the calling of your name with a very un-Combine-y level of deceptive emotion to them.

"Alyx? Hey Alyx! Alyx it's us. Hey Alyx!"
