A list of samples used in the Half-Life soundtracks

    Posted: 03 Jul 2020 08:26 PM PDT

So, there's a couple videos on Youtube about Half-Life samples. However, I ended up realising that the origin of some of the samples were incorrect (for example, the start of Military Precision's brass comes from a different sample library which has multiple variations of that same brass).

With this in mind, I figured I'd post a comprehensive list of most of the samples found in Half-Life's soundtracks. I've cross-checked to ensure each sample is legitimate in the list over a period of a week, by listening to demos and also getting some friends of mine who had access to some of these libraries whom could check for me.

Due to the obscurity of the VGM Sound Sources list, I've figured that this would be more likely found by anyone who might be searching for the samples used in the Half-Life soundtrack. As a musician, this has especially helped me out when it comes to finding what samples got used where, as I enjoy playing with these samples in their raw uncompressed formats.

Portal 2 reveals that the Borealis was made in the 1970s. However, the Borealis as seen in Episode Two shows the present day Aperture logo. Why hasn't Valve addressed or fixed this?

If Valve is fine with updating Half-Life: Alyx to change Eli's shirt, why can't they update Episode Two to change the logo on the Borealis?

[SPOILERS FOR HALF LIFE: ALYX] What did Alyx find in The Vault in the unaltered timeline?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2020 06:45 PM PDT

Let's pretend the end of Half Life 2: Episode 2 remained exactly as it was, with G-Man having never nudged time in the direction he did at the end of Alyx. What would have happened when she broke into The Vault 5 years prior? I'm really trying to wrap my head around the implications of the ending of Half Life: Alyx.

At the end of HL:A, she finds G-Man, who gives her the opportunity to save her dad 5 years in the future, which resulted in her getting hired by him. The implication is that G-Man got himself trapped to see how well Alyx would do to break into The Vault and save him, proving her worth as an employee. But does this mean she was ALWAYS an employee of G-Man?

In the original, unedited timeline with the ending to HL2:E2, wouldn't Alyx remember this interaction with G-Man, and how she came from the past to rescue her dad in the present? Was it always going to be this way? Or are there now two split timelines, one in which Eli is dead, and one where Alyx saved him?

But let's say in the timeline where she DIDN'T save him and Eli actually does die, what happened 5 years ago when she broke into The Vault? Are the entire events of Half Life: Alyx one big retcon courtesy of G-Man? Did the now crashed and destroyed Vault exist in HL2, or did G-Man go back in time after the events of HL2 and get himself intentionally trapped to ensure that the Combine create The Vault in the first place?

My thoughts are, we get the ending of HL2:E2 that we got. Suddenly, time rewinds, and Eli is alive, Alyx is kidnapped. Eli seems to understand that he just died, but G-Man fixed it somehow. The only thing I can think of that makes sense is that Gordon, Eli, and Alyx watch the timeline be edited in real time after everything goes down, and that's how HL3 begins.

I'm not sure to what extent this has been discussed on this subreddit so far (I'm guessing a lot), so pardon my duplicate question if this has already been discussed. I just finished the game last night, so I've been thinking about it quite a bit.
