Anyone tried to play HL1 wholly realistically?

    Posted: 16 Apr 2021 09:51 AM PDT

A couple rules I set for my half life 1 play throughs-

No deaths. No bhopping. React to situations as if I was really experiencing them. (All we know he knows is what's told in the hazard course, so he does have some experience with firearms and acrobatics, but isn't entirely familiar with the enemies.) Walk only, until after the test. Take 0 bullets until we've got hostiles. Always protect scientists and security guards. Use a whole clip of a gun before using on an enemy (or test out tripmines, grenades, satchel charges) Always hide behind cover before firing at marines. I don't switch weapons wildly during fights and typically prepare for them by having a secondary in my Q switch. And I go a step further and use only the gluon gun past the point you get it in lambda core all the way to the point where you go to Xen (that thing would be fucking heavy and impossible to use with the long jump module.) And lastly, in Xen I try to avoid as much combat as possible.

Am I just autistic or has anyone else done something like this?

    (Spoilers) Half-Life: Alyx Timeline Theory

    Posted: 16 Apr 2021 08:44 PM PDT

Some friends and I were discussing how the ending of Half-Life Alyx works with the timeline and I think we've crafted a good theory, here goes. So the theory is this: Up until Half-Life 2 Episode 2, Half-Life Alyx didn't happen. I believe the game didn't happen for a few reasons. The obvious reason is that Alyx wasn't in stasis during the HL2 games. The other reason is that if Alyx had opened the vault at the end of HL:A, obviously it wasn't Gordon Freeman but G-Man, so how would Alyx have explained that Gordon wasn't in there to the others? My theory is this: As soon as Eli died, G-Man created a new timeline, a timeline where the vault that held G-Man exists. This timeline was created in order to test Alyx to see if she would be a good candidate to replace Gordon. Obviously by the end of the game, she passes and is hired by G-Man. During this, she chooses to have the Combine Advisor from the end of HL2E2 killed to save Eli, however, this is still the younger version Alyx before those events had even happened at all. After she accepts G-Man's offer, she disappears from the helicopter hanger. Why did she disappear from this exact moment? When she accepted G-Man's offer, G-Man took the timeline he created to test Alyx and replaced the section of the current timeline that it would've taken place in with the new test timeline. G-Man needed to wait for Eli to be killed so he could have a way to persuade Alyx, and once this happened he created the "test timeline" which is essentially the entirety of Half-Life Alyx, where the events of the game are to see if Alyx is worthy of replacing Gordon. Please let me know if there's any plot holes, or conversely, anything that backs this up. I'd love to discuss it more and am open to any ideas.

Half Life 2 is a Good Game, but Bad Sequel

    Posted: 16 Apr 2021 07:47 PM PDT

Something i realized is that, Half Life 2 is a good game, but a bad sequel. Like why the fuck does it even have to be Gordon Freeman and Black Mesa? Seems like another mute avatar could have worked well.

And GMan, I don't see the point of him hiring Gordon. Yeah the Cascade was his doing, but I don't see why Gordon has to be hired in the first place, why he must be put 20 years later in City 17, seems like GMan could do that.

Alternatively, I think GMan, like Adrian Shepherd, should have stuck Gordon in Xen as a result of him saving everyone and finally closing the portal. 20 Years later, the Black Mesa that was rediscovering teleportation, having gone back to Xen, allowed Gordon to return to the world that is controlled by GMan, and with him is the Vortigaunt he freed.

That's one way of connecting the two games better together. Otherwise a different mute avatar could have worked just as well.
