This chicken grease looks a lot like the hazardous waste you have to avoid in half life and some source games.

What do headcrabs taste like? I think I have the answer.

    Posted: 23 Jun 2021 11:01 PM PDT

I see Russell has a cling wrapped headcrab in his fridge. I see that the chef is making headcrab curry in black mesa east. I see that the oracle likes fast headcrabs.

    Headcrabs.

We all know that the common headcrab is a known delicacy in the half-life franchise.

"They look like crabs, but they don't taste like crabs." An anonymous citizen said. The ramblings of the oracle vortigaunt never led me anywhere.

Do they taste like turkey? Perhaps like chicken? As far as I can speculate, a common headcrab's hind legs would be tender choice parts. I went on to research the nutritional value of cooked parasites and found no research regarding the topic. Seems that no one has considered cooked tapeworms to have some nutritional value. But I can't really compare a headcrab to a tapeworm. But leeches, another delicacy as shown in hl2lc, on the other hand, is another story.

Not giving up, I tried researching the nutritional value of a Venus flytrap, which arguably would be the next best thing. Still. No results because apparently they are endangered. The closest thing I could find was another Redditor asking if it is alright to make them into smoothies. Now I wonder what do headcrab smoothies taste like.

Then it dawned on me that they are basically carnivorous scavenger-parasite-things. And researching onto what vultures, hyenas and other things...

    I can assume that:

    • headcrabs are a terribly inefficient, readily available food source - The fact that it is a parasitoid to tertiary consumers says a lot. The nutritional value per headcrab is simply not enough, says the energy pyramid. Headcrabs also multiply like rabbits. This is reasonable for they are slow and clumsy and it is easy for bullsquids and whatnot to capture and eat a lot of them. Of course, they won't be satisfied with one headcrab alone. So headcrabs might have evolved this highly reproductive trait to compensate for that.
    • headcrabs may have stringy fibrous meat and might be mostly organs - Reasons being, it's a parasitoid and the way it uses human bodies as a medium to eat should require lots of sophisticated organs to viably extract nutrients from the person's body. It can be implied that the main body of a zombie is also being digested, as shown by the state of fast headcrab zombies.
    • Most Headcrabs might taste like dead things, to a human at least - It is known that the meat of an animal has a lingering aftertaste of what it ate. Judging by the headcrab's physiology, it intakes digested, rotting meat fluids.
    • In a way, headcrabs could be grown like chickens - Let's take a look at Lamarr. she's been debeaked, docile, and eats watermelons. It's known that headcrabs are quick to adapt, but the fact that the parasitoid quickly adapts into a herbivore leads me to a question: Will we see a debeaked headcrab farm in the future? With a stable food source (and headcrabs apparently being omnivorous), will it be possible to grow them to be as plump and as meaty as a turkey on thanksgiving?

In conclusion:-Somewhere out there is a tasty headcrab variant solely bred for consumption and might taste like your average chicken, maybe beef, or mutton, or pork.

    - Wild headcrabs are generally disgusting. There are definitely guidelines as to which headcrabs are good enough to eat.

-I have royally wasted my time trying to make sense of headcrabs as a food source. But it was fun I guess.

An idea I had for a future HL game

    Posted: 23 Jun 2021 11:59 AM PDT

I had an idea today for how Valve could continue the mainline narrative of Half-Life without having to commit to a full HL3 just yet. My idea involved them making another game like Half-Life Alyx, but have it be with Barney and the survivors disembarking from the escape trains after Episode 1 and have most of it be about navigating their way through the forest on their way to White Forest.

This new environment would allow for VR gameplay in larger environments and new mechanics, to add to the developments in gameplay that Valve made with Alyx. The last segment could potentially be continuation of Episode 2 and the HLA post-credits scene, and could push the narrative forward again.

With this layout, the "new Half-Life saga" would be a 3-stage journey, with it being comprised of Alyx, the Barney-focused game, and the Half-Life 3 finale. I feel like doing this game before HL3 would be useful for establishing extra exposition for the post-Uprising universe, the same way Alyx provided exposition for the pre-Uprising universe.
