Posted: 06 Aug 2021 08:11 PM PDT I know everyone who's played hla has said how great Jeff is but I want to go into a bit of detail about why I think it works so well as a horror chapter. A lot of the time, horror is created through a lack of information. Complex ai like in alien isolation keeps the player on their toes, constantly having to keep track of where the a alien is and what it's doing. Darkness also does this, preventing the player from getting a clear view. Jeff is a complete counter to this. The level takes place in the late day, and most of it is quite bright (with one notable exception). Jeff himself is a very predictable ai: he'll patrol until he hears a loud noise, then he'll go and investigate. The noises he reacts to are consistent and reliable, for instance he always reacts to shattered glass but never to the player's footsteps or falling sounds. (The devs to into more detail on this here, it's pretty interesting: https://youtu.be/6mRrdf_lBjM.) And all of this is explained to the player in a safe environment first, so they know all this going in. Despite all this, the chapter is still terrifying. It does this not by taking control away or obscuring info, but by putting the player in situations where they'll likely make errors. Like putting a bottle in the way while you're trying to scan a wall, or having a bottle roll out when you open a drawer. My favorite moment from the chapter is when the game makes you release Jeff from the freezer. It puts the situation entirely in your control, Jeff doesn't escape on his own, and you're free to wait and plan as long as your want. But you eventually have to force yourself to do the inevitable. And the moment of realization when you follow the power line to the door is just amazingly done. Tl;dr: Jeff doesn't follow the usual conventions of horror, and still feels scary despite making everything clear and understandable to the player. [link] [comments] | ||

I did some math on how many humans are left in hl2 Posted: 06 Aug 2021 09:28 AM PDT I did some math and made some assumptions under another post and I figured that during the events of hl2 the human population was probably halved from what it was pre black mesa. It looked a little like this:
(6.5bil - 2bil) - (60mil x 20yrs) = 3.2 billion humans remaining roughly by my estimate I've seen some numbers from people saying as low as 1 million to 0.5-1 billion but to me it seems like if humanity offered that little manpower that it wouldn't be worth wasting resources on us (law enforcement, infrastructure, food, water, shelter, even plumbing and electricity in C17 at least) Let me know what you guys think.
