Tyler (VNN) on Valve's reaction to the community response to Half-Life Alyx

    Posted: 28 Nov 2019 01:19 AM PST

In a stream yesterday Tyler (Valve News Network) went into detail on numerous topics surrounding what sources tell him of Valve's internal reaction to how HL:A has been received. The VOD link with timestamp is here: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/514169906?t=2h45m20s

I have attempted to summarise what he says:

Artifact's disastrous launch was a huge shock for Valve and made them worried about the community's response to Alyx (a VR-only prequel) which was in development at the time -- especially since it appeared that VR was dying with Facebook attempting to create a walled garden and a lack of game releases with mainstream appeal. Alyx was meant to have released with the Index in December of 2018, but the dev cycle took longer than anticipated even with re-use of assets of shelved HL3 attempts (the amount of developed assets, for example, is apparently the highest of any Valve game and twice that of Portal 2).

Low confidence resulted in many Valve employees taking the approach that the game should just be dropped on Steam without a trailer; those who realised that a marketing hype cycle would be paramount to its success thankfully prevailed. The trailer itself was apparently created less than a month before it was released and (although the game itself is reportedly great) it is not representative of the gameplay and involved contracting out to put it together.

So, the trailer released and accrued 10 million views within the space of a week. Valve is relieved, but has realised something worrying. Thanks to the popularity of the trailer and how many people it has sold on VR, the Index has sold more units between the drop of the trailer to now than from when it was first made available to the trailer. While Boneworks and the other VR games available now will tide many over until Half-Life Alyx's release, there are no subsequent major upcoming VR games. Thousands are investing huge amounts of money into new hardware with only 2 major releases to justify their purchase.

With a year or two until Alyx-inspired VR games will hopefully begin releasing, Valve realised the onus is on them to provide a stream of content for VR to maintain consumer interest. First, Valve intends to release Source 2 tools. What tools come with Half-Life Alyx essentially constitute a workshop map creator, with no full SDK allowing for, say, the development of a Counter-Strike VR equivalent. While a full code-base release would be ideal, this is something that will take several months of work after Alyx's release to make usable for the public -- though when and if this is released it will result in a community mod boom of revolutionary scale.

Secondly, Valve is deliberating on the possibility of very quickly churning out a new game using Alyx as a base, similar to the HL2 episodes; Tyler claims they are considering something like a "Half-Life: Barney" which would potentially take place during HL2. Perhaps Valve will receive requests from third-party developers to create spin-offs, like with Opposing Force and Blue Shift, in which case it would be in their best interests to accept.

    Head crab vr headset when?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2019 02:24 PM PST

THEORY: Poison headcrabs are going to be even scarier than we're all imagining.

    Posted: 28 Nov 2019 12:06 PM PST

In HL2, if a barnacle eats a poison headcrab, it dies almost instantly. The same would be true Gordon if not for his HEV suit giving him an antidote.

With this in mind, I think poison headcrabs will be even more lethal in HL:A, possibly requiring you to manually administer an antidote in order to regain health. Top that with climbing on walls/ceilings, and just being scary in general, and we have ourselves a true nightmare.

Could you have imagine if Half Life: Alyx was announced at a conference in front of a crowd.

    Posted: 28 Nov 2019 07:30 AM PST

It could have been such a huge potential to see an entire crowd freakout over the announcement of a new Half Life game in over a decade. The footage of that reveal could have been so much better hyped. But that's just me, I love watching huge crowd freakouts at gaming conventions. What are your thoughts?

Thank you Valve, you've encaptured everything everyone ever wanted for a new Half-life game. Many who are a fan and have been sense the first game are thrilled. I love the series and hope the people enjoy it, I will be watching all the playthroughs to 'play the game' as much as I can. Thank you.
