Posted: 21 Dec 2019 07:31 PM PST Black Mesa Insecurity, Black Mesa Green Forces, and Black Mesa Decay should join forces similar to how Tripmine studios was formed. I know Crowbar Collective is going to disperse soon after Black Mesa is fully released, but these three projects can get done. Black Mesa Insecurity only needs Xen now, Black Mesa Green Forces may need some updates and Xen, and Black mesa Decay needs to be refined to look like BM, BM:I, and BM:GF. Either way, I hope they join together. Now that Black Mesa Xen is released, these three can now be finished. [link] [comments]

Something interesting about G-Man that doesn't get talked about a lot Posted: 21 Dec 2019 09:21 AM PST So this just blew my mind - at the end of Half Life 2 Dr. Breen says that Gordon's "contract is open to the highest bidder", and that he "has proven himself a fine pawn to those who control him" - Basiclly Breen offers Gordon to work for him, as he knows he is already controlled by G-Man, right? But then who are G-Man's employers if they are willing to 'sell' Gordon to Breen? I've never really seen this talked about in regards to who G-Man is and I just now picked up on it.. I hope we can still use the actual Gravity Gun in HL:A Posted: 21 Dec 2019 12:29 PM PST I know the gravity gloves are meant to be a in story take on how we're able to grab shit from a far, but I can't help but feel like it feels kind of cheap. The Gravity Gun was legendary in HL2 and it's made to seem like it was Alex and Eli's magnum opus so to say. If they knew how to make gravity gloves then why the heck would they not just recreate them because they seem much better then the gravity gun Who knows. This is just a very minor nitpick, I'm excited for this game. I do hope we see it though. It would be very nostalgic to be using the gravity gun in a 4k VR Valve made Half-Life game. Posted: 21 Dec 2019 10:21 AM PST Even if there was a nuke set off, and all this other junk, don't you think there are some scientists hiding out there, making weapons for the resistance or living peacefully? I'd like to think so. We know there are at least like that escaped, 8, right? Because Isaac, Wallace, Rosenberg, Arne, (and a couple other at the end of Blue Shift) escaped. Not to mention Gordon. And who says the nuke exploded all of Black Mesa? Actually, genuine question, do you think a nuke would destroy all of Black Mesa? So yeah, just food for thought. Mainly because I really like the idea of one of them Einstein scientist guys to just be hiding out in the middle of nowhere with a little farm or something. [link] [comments]

Barnacle comparison in HL1 and HL2 Posted: 21 Dec 2019 03:55 PM PST Barnacles encountered in HL1 and its expansions, as stated in opposing force, are only able to latch onto organic surfaces. The term "organic" may be a bit vague as they aren't able to stick to wooden crates, so i assume that "organic" refers to any surface resembling an edible animal. However, in half life 2, their tongues stick to most objects, including metal barrels and plastic containers. Naturally, the reason for this is so a new game mechanic of distracting them with objects could be implemented, but let us look at what the in-universe explanation may be. From an evolutionary standpoint, it would make more sense that barnacles latched onto everything earlier in time, and later developed a way to differentiate edible and inedible objects. Since barnacles are sessile organisms, it would be in their interest to conserve as much energy as possible, and pulling heavy objects tens of meters will require that energy. Therefore, it would be expected that a barnacle who pulled every random object would exhaust itself far more quickly than one able to choose its pray. Due to how infrequently things come under a single barnacle's tongue, this may not be a deciding factor, but there definitely is no reason why they would lose the ability to distinguish pray. However, i propose a theory that might explain this difference. What if barnacles encountered in HL1 and HL2 are actually 2 distinct species that need not even be closely related? There are several pieces of evidence that might support this idea. I am not a biologist, so if anyone has more knowledge that might support or correct some of these arguments, feel free to comment. First to give a real world example of organisms that look relatively similar (by that i refer to first glance, as someone who studied them can obviously tell the difference) but are not as closely related as one might think : hagfish and eels. A random flat fish with a jaw is genetically closer to an eel than a hagfish despite hagfish and eel having a long body, but it would not be trivial to conclude that without much closer examination. I) Barnacles encountered in half life 1 have red blood, while those in half life 2 have green/yellow blood. A similar thing happens in the real world, as for example haemoglobin gives red color to humans and most vertebrates in general, while haemocyanin in squids provides blue color. Having a completely different oxygen carrier molecule might indicate that they may not be very closely related. However, there is a possibility that the different blood color is due to their recent diet (humans make it red, xen creatures green/yellow). But in HL1, some barnacles are located in places where it would be very implausible for a human to find themselves in, so i don`t think that it is influenced by diet. II) Barnacles appear to have a radial body symmetry (at least i cannot find anything that would make them bilateral), but those in HL2 have 4 fold symmetry, something like real life jellyfish, while those in HL1 have 6 fold symmetry. Now, I'm not sure how major this point is, since i know some starfish species can have variable number of arms. III) Their method of eating humanoid targets is somewhat different. In HL1 they have a single visible mouth and upon bringing a human to it,they "bite" only the upper part and start chewing, while the remaining part remains hanging. As for HL2, firstly they have an extendable jaw/stomach which they reveal only when swallowing their pray. Secondly, they first swallow the whole human and only then start digesting. Also one thing to note is that their "jaw" drops when they die, something that doesn't happen to their HL1 counterparts. Another feature that distinguishes barnacles is the HL2 ones' ability to immediately kill their pray on contact, but this is actually possible to be the result of evolution, so i'm not including it with the other arguments. What do you think? Could them being 2 different species be plausible? [link] [comments] |
