Look I know we’re all excited about Half Life: Alyx, but we all need to take a moment to appreciate the TRULY important things in Half Life: Father Grigori is wearing converse.

(Re-uploaded due to Reddit shenanigans.) Finally, I was able to jump back into Black Mesa after the XEN release. I did not expect to get this much goosebumps from a main menu until I got completely caught off guard by this new scene.

My speculation on what we know about HL:A so far.

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 07:24 PM PST

I've just played through the episodes and studied the trailer for quite a bit and these are some things I believe we might come to expect in this game. Also, there are some half life spoilers scattered below just in case for those that have not finished all of the titles (we probably earned a lot of new fans recently you know.) So don't continue if that is you.

We are going to learn a lot more about the G-man in this game than ever before.

In previous games, the G-man has always been an enigmatic, vague figure. We don't know much about him, what he wants, what he thinks, even if he is a human. He's always been what seems to be business first. The only time we got to see a bit of a personal side of the gman is in ep2 when he has a heart to heart with gordon in EP2.

Now this may be assuming much but I believe this because it seems that Alyx is going to be experiencing hallucinations from the gman and or be taken to a realm of the gman that is not his stasis area. This door seems to be a figure of a blue eye. Possibly the mysterious group or race the gman is in? His own personal logo? Maybe the logo of his business? That door in itself is located in a very odd, non-earth location I believe. This just doesn't look like the rebels handiwork. There also seems to be what appears to be blue eyes hovering? Another example. Looks quite peculiar to the gman's most striking characteristic: His eyes that can glow in the dark. We've seen the Gman take us to black mesa, kraken base and the missile silo in the EP2 heart to heart scene. We've seen him take us to a helicopter in the end of OP4. This may be more of that.

    The relationship between the Gman/Alyx/Eli

We know the Gman got Alyx out of Black Mesa. Knowing the events of Episode 2, Eli's knowledge of him and Alyx being able to be manipulated by the gman, I wonder if the Gman promised to save alyx as a form of black mail to get what he wanted from Eli. Kind of like Eli made a deal with the devil kind of thing and he is still paying for it to this day. In the trailer we hear Eli apologize to Alyx saying that he "never told [her]". We also hear what seems to be a vortigaunt say "Alyx vance alone cannot prevent his fate". Whatever it may be, I think this is all tied to the Gman's grand scheme and the death of Eli in Ep2.

This deal I believe Eli made with the Gman, was to save Alyx from black mesa and in return be able to manipulate Alyx like we saw in Ep2 when he possessed her to say "prepare for unforseen consequences". The Gman ignored "naysayers" and envisioned a use for Alyx just like he saw a use for Gordon and Adrian. Though in this case, the gman kept the young vance in the real world so that she can physically grow and hone her vast skills in mechanics, computers and combat. Keeping her in stasis would leave her like gordon, unable to truly age and thus still be a mere child. Alyx was a long term investment for the Gman. Based on the Episitle 3 text, the Borealis was to be used against the combine. However we see how in Ep2, Eli was vehemently against the use of the Borealis against the Combine. Even as far as to say that it must be destroyed. My guess is that this, plus Eli openly talking to Gordon about their "mutual friend" was seen as a breach in contract for the Gman, and ultimately led to his fate.

We probably won't see the seven hour war.

I've read some speculation around here that we will play through the seven hour war. I doubt this because the war happened immediately after the Black Mesa incident. Alyx was still a baby then. However, since I believe Alyx will be experiencing hallucinations, maybe we will probably see some of it after all. Though maybe not exactly partake in it. I think at most we will get some details of it but never anything beyond some conversational details.

    Azian

This is a game about Alyx and we will surely know more of her backstory, of what drives her and what made her become a badass. In the Breen office scene in hl2, Alyx seems very defensive when it comes to Breen mentioning her mother. We will surely learn more about her mother, or even some reference to her in some dialogue between her and Eli. I bet there will be a hallucination scene involving her. Maybe we might know what happened to her after all?

    We don't go to ravenholm.

There was a connection to ravenholm to black mesa east. Alyx mentioned how they were able to go there in the past. It sounded like a rebel haven. Then it got shelled and the town went to shit by the time Gordon arrived. I think we will go back to ravenholm, though I am not sure if we will see Ravenholm in it's pre-shelled state. Maybe we will get to witness the moment Ravenholm got shelled? That will be something. Noticing Alyx's body language and tone when she talks about Ravenholm makes it seem like she must have experienced it first hand. This game might be her experience of the horrors of it. This area looks gives me Ravenholm vibes. Valve said they were going back to making their games scary. Ravenholm can certainly achieve that effect for valve.

If this is the case, we may also see a glimpse of Father Grigori too!

What ever Alyx and the rebels do to fight against the combine, will fail.

Obviously Alyx, Russel, and Eli are scheming to take a blow against the combine. Whatever it is, it won't work in the end. As seen in the beginning of Half life 2, The combine have complete control of earth. The citadel scaffolding is gone, the rebels are still at hiding, city 17 is still mostly intact and not in the war state we see in late HL2 chapters and from what we gathered in the trailer, Eli gets captured. The true blow to the combine and spark of revolution happened when Freeman made his mark in Nova Prospekt as mentioned by Kleiner in the slow teleportation scene in HL2. Whatever it was, the combine won the battle we will see in HL:A. I think in the end, the plan will devolve into the rebel leaders and Alyx just trying to cut their losses and save themselves. This is what will set us up for HL2. I know in the trailer they mention about acquiring a certain weapon in the vault and that getting it will "change things forever". But when you arrive to city 17 in HL2, what has changed? Breen and the combine still have almost complete control of earth. People are still lining up to get their food rations and the desperate are still signing up for civil protection to get better benefits.

Now I know it's definitely a lot to speculate about based on one trailer but this is just what I think so far until we hopefully get more stuff at the game awards. What do you guys think we will see, experience in the game?

Remember when d0g picked up the Citadel wall and Gordon jumped into the hole?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 07:13 AM PST

At the end of the Follow Freeman chapter, Barney says, "And if you see Dr. Breen, tellhim I said, '____ you!'"

The noise of the Citadel wall crashing down is supposed to muffle the word "fuck," but years ago, I was playing HL2 on a slower machine and it lagged slightly right at that moment. The wall didn't crash down at the right moment and in case you're wondering, Barney actually does say "fuck." I heard it perfectly. So great.

Half-Life Source and Half-Life Deathmatch Source are the only VALVe games in which they didn't bother to put new art for the new library

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 04:59 PM PST

Even Ricochet and Alien Swarm have complete library art.

HL:S and HLDM:S only have the main cover and even then the deathmatch one seems half baked with that half-life title in the background.
