- You know, Pyrocynical's "Black Mesa" Series made me think getting this achievement would be harder than it actually is. The only problem I had was the fact that once you reach the surface the game stops being fun and becomes really fucking frustrating for the rest of the game.

Posted: 11 Jan 2020 08:56 PM PST In anticipation for Half-Life: Alyx, I've embarked on a quest to play every Half-Life game for the first time. I thoroughly enjoyed the original Half-Life but was rather disappointed with Opposing Force. I've now reached the final game in the original Half-Life engine. Here's my review for Half-Life: Blue Shift. Warning: Spoilers! Half-Life: Blue shift is by far my favorite Half-Life game so far, it fixed almost every problem I had with the past two games. First of all, the story, while not quite as engaging as the first game, was fantastic and much better than that of Opposing Force. We get a decent amount of extra lore to add on top of the original game, for instance, we learn that Black-Mesa had been using Xen as an anchor point for their experiments with teleportation on Earth. We also learn that Black-Mesa security guards are definitely not paid enough to deal with all the crap that they have to deal with. It was also nice to actually escape the facility without any interference; Barry just gets to leave which I found much more satisfying that being trapped in an endless void until seemingly the end of time. In fact, Gman didn't have any interest in Barry at all. I also really enjoyed seeing Gordan Freeman from a few different perspectives a few times. The level design was also superb, probably the best so far. There were no dead ends from what I can remember, and the game did a much better job of changing up the goal of levels without leaving the player completely lost. Which brings me to my next point on the level design, not once did I ever have trouble finding out which direction I was supposed to go. This was never a big problem in either of the first two games, but I definitely remember getting lost at least a couple of times. I also never felt particularly overwhelmed in any of the battles. Which was a major problem in Opposing Force. However, one point that Opposing Force did better in regards to battle, it was the weapon selection. With the exception of the Crowbar's return, the weapons just weren't quite as fun. The lack of a final boss was a bit disorienting at first but ultimately didn't hinder the overall experience much. I didn't end up having much to talk about this time around but I did thoroughly enjoy Half-Life: Blur Shift, even more so than the original Half-Life. Now, I can finally move on from Half-Life 1 and get to the game I've wanted to play most since the beginning: Half-Life 2. [link] [comments] | ||

Posted: 10 Jan 2020 11:24 PM PST "According to Gabe Newell, Half-Life was budgeted with the expectation of lifetime sales around 180,000 units. As of November 16, 2004, eight million copies of the game had been sold." - Wikipedia "Newell once told The Puget Sound Journal that he hopes Half-Life 2 will sell more than 15 million copies in three years." - Final Hours of Half-Life 2 "In December 2008, Valve announced that the two main Half-Life games had sold 15.8 million units in retail (9.3m for the first, 6.5m for the second)" - Wikipedia Why do you think Half-Life 2 sales were not as much as Newell hoped?
