For me, the pod ride in HL2 is masterful. The use of Space Ocean throws me back to first game, and how the resonance cascade was what led to the whole world going to hell in the first place. The gargantuan size of the Citadel coupled with the music combine to send an eerie chill up my spine.

Half-Life: Alyx might be both a prequel and a sequel to HL2

The delivery of "Close your eyes, honey!" is in the Alyx trailer was pretty much identical to when Eli dies in HL Episode 2. The line was simply redone for Eli's new voice actor. This suggests that we're going to see Eli die again, in Half-Life: Alyx.

My guess is that the game will begin as a prequel, but it will catch up, and follow on from the end of HL2 Episode 2.

Why the Combine didn't overwhelm Freeman during HL2

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 10:04 PM PST

TL;DR: At the start and mid portions of the game the Combine thinks Gordon is mid level threat that can be taken care of with standard Overwatch troops. When he destroys Nova Prospekt, Gordonis rises up as the top level threat. The reason that Overwatch doesn't overwhelm Freeman is because he went missing for a week and a full out war has started between the Resistance and the Combine, so Overwatch forces are very scattered.

A question that I have seen on this subreddit is "Why hasn't the Combine overwhelm Gordon with Striders and Gunships right off the gate?" or something along those lines. Of course this has been done for gameplay reasons, but there is a logical explanation in universe, which I explain in depth in the following post:

ROUTE KANAL / WATER HAZARD / BLACK MESA EAST

In Route Kanal, Gordon starts as a fugitive fleeing from Civil Protection. He manages to take down a fair amount of Metrocops, and City Scanners while evading CP through the underground railroad. At this point, Freeman has become a threat, but not a very significant one. He has caused a bigger amount of chaos than any other citizen in recent history, so all the Metrocops are alerted to be on the lookout for him and he gains the title Anticitizen Number One. Even then Overwatch forces don't consider he enough of threat and think that he will eventually be taken down by Metrocops. Against all odds (and thanks to the H.E.V. suit and some possible influence of the G-Man) Gordon forces his way through numerous platoons of Metrocops and thanks to a little help from the Resistance, takes down a Hunter-Chopper. I imagine that now his threat level has rised. Overwatch then launches an all out attack on the place Gordon hides, Black Mesa East. He mysteriously disappears and evades Combine forces by going to Ravenholm.

HIGHWAY 17/ SANDTRAPS / NOVA PROSPEKT / ENTANGLEMENT

Gordon is sighted by the first time in let's say, 12 hours (last time was at evening at Black Mesa East and it's dawn when Gordon confronts Snipers and the garage shootout happens, so let's say, 6:30-8 PM to 6:30-8 AM) Overwatch assumes that the Overwatch Soldiers stationed throughout the coast would do the job. They don't. They launch a attack on New Little Odessa using a Gunship. When Gordon successfully defeats this Gunship, Overwatch sends multiple other Gunships to intercept Gordon in his travel through Highway 17. He defeats each single one of them, while raising numerous Combine bases. I imagine that Overwatch loses track of Gordon/Waits to regroup at the end of Sandtraps since he remains undisturbed by Overwatch during that time. Gordon then proceeds to break in Nova Prospekt, a facility of great importance for the Combine, where they store prisoners, turn Rebels and Anticitizens in to Stalkers, serves as a lab and is where the Combine prototype local teleporter is located. His threat level then rises again, which makes Overwatch deploy 2 gunships and order the guards that are located outside to attack Gordon, which he makes short work of due to his personal army of Antlions. Gordon eliminates most of it's staff and makes the older parts be infested with Antlions. He then blows up the entire place with Alyx by using the teleporter. He is now considered the top level threat to the Combine empire located on Earth.

    ANTICITIZEN ONE / FOLLOW FREEMAN

Even though Freeman is now threat number one, due to his disappearance for an entire week and the war that has started between the Combine and the Resistance, Overwatch is unable to overwhelm him due to it's forces being scattered everywhere throughout City 17, Gordon appearing out of nowhere after being presumed dead, and general chaos. Even then, after he runs in to Overwatch troops and deactivate the Supression device at the top of the Overwatch Nexus, Overwatch forces regroup and manage to send some Striders and a Gunship towards Freeman, which he manages to take down due to abundant cover amongst the rubble and a rocket launcher. After tearing his way down through hordes of troops and Striders, I imagine the Combine really hasn't gotten anything else to throw at him.

So that's it! Sorry if it's a bit long. Feel free to criticize me in the comments.
