    Father Grigori for those curious

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 11:30 PM PDT

Father Grigori seems... Extremely deranged. And he is, but with good reason. Whether he was a priest before the shelling of Ravenholm or after isn't exactly clear, but he seems to take his work seriously, if a bit [Very] over enthusiastic.

But there's something that we know about Headcrab Zombies. The host is still alive, and conscious. I've heard it theorized that they tear out the insides to make sure that if the host does get the Headcrab removed, their death is still assured. Thus preventing any progress to undo any progress a Headcrab makes other than death. That's not exactly relevant though. The thing is, that if you listen to the screams, you can hear them begging for help, or crying out in pain as they burn. They're alive. Very alive. And likely in unimaginable pain.

But I was just playing through Ravenholm, and heard a line that Father Grigori speaks in the Graveyard when he was hit. "I think no worse of thee." It clicked all the sudden. The other lines like "I will end your torment" "You meant no harm" and "I remember your true face" point to something. He knows that they can hear him. The things he says and does are because his "Flock" the people he was responsible for are in unimaginable pain and agony. So he goes around, telling them that they are being saved, or that it's ok, that he is not angry with them. He's telling them reassuring things as he kills them, because for every Zombie he kills, that's one more soul he has saved from what can only be described as a living hell.

He's gone... A little mad. But when you're going around putting down people you once knew and cared for every day of your life, all the while knowing that if you die, if you fail, that they will all remain like this for God knows how long, in endless pain and suffering.

Reading his quotes, especially the engage and kill lines, paints a better picture of who he is within this sense, and why he's saying this mad dribble. He is actively putting down the people in this town to save them from the pain, and is trying to reassure them as he sends them on their way.

A new secret ending has been found in Half-Life: Alyx!

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 01:37 AM PDT

Replaying Half Life 2 for the first time in ~7 years...the intro has some of the best economical exposition around.

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 01:16 PM PDT

    In a very short time:

    • You get the Orwellian oppressive feel across with the combine and Dr. Breen in City 17.
    • We're introduced to the combine, striders, dropships, the citadel.
    • We learn about what's been going on (the benefactors, the suppression of breeding)
    • We get some re-introductions to old characters (Barney, Dr. Kleiner, G-Man) and intros to some new (Dr. Breen, Alyx).

All in a VERY short time frame. It always boggles my mind how many games try to copy this formula, but take WAY longer to get their point across.

No doubt Valve spent a huge amount of time tweaking and playtesting this to get it right.

    Absolute wizards.
