HL:Alyx had an interesting effect on my wife. (Minor intro spoilers)

    Posted: 18 Jun 2020 05:32 AM PDT

It's a long one. Thank the coffee. Tldr at the bottom. Enjoy the typos.

I recently picked up a Rift S a few weeks ago as my first headset to own. I've dabbled in the genre here and there over the years at friends houses and museums and loved it. Finally got a chance to really dive in into though and thought I pretty much knew what to expect. Damn was I wrong. If someone doesnt believe we're living in the future, you have them play vr for a half hour and see if they still believe that. But I'm not here to preach VR goodness, I'm here to discuss and interesting side-effect of it

As a fan of the HL series from the Demo release of the first game, grabbing HL:Alyx was a driving force to pickup a headset. (Good job Valve marketing team.) Starting it up for the first time qas mind blowing. Past vr experience was limited to small interactive learning scenes and beat saber type party games. HL:A was a whole different animal. Literally teared up a tiny bit walking the halls of the apartment complex in the intro just thinking about how much life has changed since the youngers days of doing that same thing in HL2. Now I was there confused by how real it felt but excited by what exactly ibwas getting into. I loved every second of it.

I got through the first 2 or 3 chapters and had to take a break. Still in absolute awe and told my wife she had to try it. This was would be her first real vr game. She did the oculus tutorial "First Encounter" or whatever it's called earlier that day and was blown away. Jumping into HL:A made her realize she didnt experience shit earlier haha.

After 10 minutes or so of getting her bearings on the opening balcony she was ready to move forward. Inspecting every detail, peeking around every corner in a nervous fashion knowing something in the air was off. She had to pause a minute or so upon meeting the one resistance fighter outside the gate. Taken back by how lifelike the person looked standing a couple feet in front if her. She was loving it. She makes her way to the elevator to go meet Eli. I know what's coming so I'm interested into what her reaction is.

Elevator doors open and shes greeted by Eli getting apprehended. Audible gasps. Shes quiet. I'm grinning. Combine notices her and she takes a step back in real life. Its tense. Her arms are already raised as she says "Dont shoot!" followed by Alyx repeating the same line. Combine start yelling her, she starts panicking a little. They rush her, she swings off the headset almost out of breath.

When I went through this section ibwas pumped. Out numbered, out gunned, and backed into a corner. My adrenaline was pumping. I was in survival mode ready to throw down. Grab a gun, start firing, whatever i needed to do, i loved it. She felt differently.

In her eyes, she was a woman. Alone. In an elevator of an old apartment building. Seeing 2 huge guys in front of her with guns. Yelling at her, not listening, forcing their way into a confined space with her. She was scared. Not in a horror-movie, what's that noise in the shadow, scared, but actual fear. Uncomfortable, nervous, vulnerable, fear. She was taken back by seeing a life size 3d woman in front of her a few minutes prior. I didnt realize how her brain would react to seeing a life size threat rushing her. She had to take a break and shake the feeling.

It was an extremely interesting situation to see her in. Even in the safety of it being virtual her fight or flight systems still kicked in. I'm no way saying women are anything less than men, I'm just pointing out the fact that I learned a little bit on just how differently we can be wired. If the elevator situation happened to me in real life, as much as I hate to admit, I probably wouldnt try to go out guns blazing like I did in VR. I was immersed for sure but I think a larger part of me was still grounded in the real world due to having a bit more experience with the thing. My wife was brand new to it all so while I'm sure she wants by any means 100% in the vr landscape she probably felt more attached to it then I did. Thus making her subconscious reactions much more prevalent. I recognized the safety of the VR enviorment so I wanted to do the dangerous stuff that I wouldnt in real life. She was just going along for the ride so the dangerous stuff still felt dangerous.

She still enjoyed herself and got back into it a little but later but man... its definitely an odd feeling thinking shes going to experience something cool only to have it turn around and place her in a 'dangerous situation' I felt a sense of empathy towards her even though 'it's just a game'.

I'm curious to know anyone else's reactions or reactions of people they know. I never would have thought that scenes like that could provoke an almost primal response. Maybe primal isnt the best word but you get what I mean.

Currently she loves the vr. Shes on it more than I am and shes not even the gamer haha. Shes definitely getting more used to it. Watching her play Walking Dead is a trip because that fear is mostly gone. She still peeks corners and jumps at the scary parts but shes able to grab a walker by the head and shice a screwdriver in its eye socket while laughing so I think it's safe to say shes overcoming feeling of immenent threat.

Tldr: Wife and I didnt realize she would feel in danger having 2 grown ass men cornering her with guns drawn.

    Screen goes black after death

    Posted: 18 Jun 2020 07:46 PM PDT

I'm currently on Lamda Core in the original HalfLife and I'm on that rotating thing with all the teleporting portal rift things. Anyway, whenever I fall into the radioactive liquid at the bottom and die, my screen goes black except for the little menu at the bottom left corner. I can load my most recent game from there, but It's just a hassle compared to the usual way where you click and it loads you at your most recent save. I've looked up this issue and I can't seem to find anyone else that has it. I've tried restarting steam, halflife, and my computer, and none of those have worked. Has anyone else had this issue at all and does anyone know the solution?
