    [Theory] The Combine cannot control the Vortigaunts without the Nihilanth

    I've recently been mulling over the finer details of how the Half-Life universe operates.

    We know that the Nihilanth/Alien Controllers and the Vortigaunts/Alien Grunts are related and come from the same dimension. We also know that their world was once invaded by the Universal Union and that the Nihilanth's kind lost this war and their home, which is why they had taken refuge in the Borderworld Xen.

    We also know that the Vortigaunts are, at least compared to humans, immensely powerful. They do not experience time, distance, and consciousness in the same way as us. They are linked to the Vortessence and can use it to hold back even stronger entities such as the G-Man. And yet, we know one key detail about the Vortigaunt race's history: that before the invasion they collectively lived a humble existence as antlion shepherds.

    My theory is that the Vortigaunts have always existed as a servant race of the Nihilanth's people, and that historically it was the Nihilanth's species that had control over the Vortessence. When the Combine first came to their home I think that they intended to use the Vortigaunts as vortessence batteries just like in Half-Life 2's beta, but they were going to get it done by controlling the Nihilanth's race.

    Of course this failed because they drove almost all of the Nihilanth's species to extinction save for one, and it was later killed by the Freeman. Now we know as per Half-Life 2 and Breengrub that the Combine still have an interest in the Vortigaunts, but there is no longer an easy mechanism of control. They have to rely on cruel Nova Prospekt experiments and just stuff living specimens into those orange vats.

    TL;DR: When the Freeman saved the Vortigaunts from the cruelty of the Nihilanth, that was their first taste of freedom in the history of their people and a major setback in the Combine's plans.

    Blue Shift starts with the whole "Subject" thing detailing his name, occupation and status so that had me wondering.

    Are there G-man sightings in Blue Shift? I haven't finished it, but i know he escapes

    What should I know about half life before I play it?

    I really want to get into this series, and after buying the valve pack (which happens to conveniently have the half life bundle in it) I've realized there's more to the game than half-life 1-2. In what order do I play half-life, blue shift, opposing force, half-life 2, half-life 2: episode one-two.

    What the hell is lost coast? Read somewhere that it isn't worth the time.

    Do I play the original half-life or do I play half-life source?

    Friend told me Half-Life deathmatch is just vs. other players but I'm curious as to if it's died yet/if it's worth my time.

    TIL the reason why Barney Calhoun was named Barney was because Marc Laidlaw thought the Security Guards from Half-Life 1 looked a lot like Barney Fife from The Andy Griffith Show.
