Would it bother you if they gave Gordon Freeman a voice in the next Half Life game?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2020 03:00 PM PST

Being a mega fan, I've watched the ending to HLA a few times now and every time I do I notice something new. My latest rewatch of it after finally getting a headset and finishing the game, I noticed after the HEV gives him the "seek medical attention" warning, you can hear Gordon catching his breath. Obviously, he's not mute I'm sure everyone realizes that by now, but the breathing has me wondering-

If they decided to have Gordon actually speak for a new Half Life game, how many people would be for it and against it?

Of course there's no chance in hell they would ever let it happen, but theoretically- I'm on team let him speak! I understand the original goal for the game was to have you and Gordon be a single entity in the world, so that his experiences are yours. But I feel like that doesn't have to be a golden rule for Half Life, considering I felt just as connected to the story with Gordon not speaking and Alyx speaking the whole game. At this point, I feel like him not speaking is an awkward artistic decision being made by Valve, which is in current time; a very outdated idea of "the silent protagonist" that disconnects you more then connects you. Just imagine Arthur from Red Dead never having said a word, it wouldn't have been nearly as impactful because he has an actual character- the most we get from Gordon is what everyone around us says and the few clues we pick up about what he's like. I'm probably biased as well because I've NEVER been a fan of the "silent protagonist", I like it when I'm playing someone that feels like a person instead of an empty shell I'm inhabiting... sorry for the ramble lmk what y'all think!!

Idk if this is the correct place to post this (due to Rule #2) but I found this in the Github Wiki for Mapbase (an HL2 mod that overhauls Source 2013 to make mapping/modding easier) on a Vscript Tutorial and I thought it was funny.

Would many of you be interested in a YouTube series like this?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2020 02:39 PM PST

One thing I've always enjoyed doing is loading up random old Source/GoldSrc maps and just exploring. They're so interesting in that they're all small passion projects by thousands of different people. They are all made with the same set of tools, but most maps are totally unique with different environments, locations, moods, themes histories and reasons for being created, yet they're all united with that familiar Source engine feeling the entire massive community has grown to love over the past two decades.

With the amount of effort that goes into these projects, it's a real shame that most are eventually forgotten and fade into nothing more than a distant memory. They are like lost works of art. It's especially saddening for me because they're really tied up with my childhood.

I would love to make a series of short YouTube videos exploring and talking about old maps, and if possible contacting the creators for insight; why the map was made, any fun technical details, etc. Of course a series like this is pointless if nobody is going to watch it. What do you guys think? I got the idea while watching this 3kliksphillip video.

I found this on the Steam page for Final Fantasy XV. As a fan of both franchises, this fills me with glee.
