    Gman is Valve Theory (expanded)

    Posted: 19 Dec 2020 10:17 AM PST

I've followed all of the dominant theories about Gman on the internet over the years and with the ending of Half Life Alyx I feel like the "Gman is Valve" theory is the most correct. Or more specifically "Valve is Gman's Employer" and I want to explain some reasons why.

I feel pretty strongly like the "Gman is an Advisor" theory does not adequately explain the Gman's speeches, particularly his end speech of Half Life 2 and his end speech of Half Life Alyx.

In Half Life 2, he says that he's received offers from various clients for Gordon's services. If Gman is an advisor who's "employers" are the other advisors still enslaved by the combine, then how can this be possible? How can he have multiple offers from multiple clients? This breaks the theory in my perspective.

Additionally, in Half Life Alyx, he says that removing the combine from earth is, specifically, against the wishes of his employers. This contradicts that the Gman is working for enslaved advisors, because it implies he is not a direct adversary with the combine. He is more of a neutral stance with the combine.

I feel like every single one of Gman's speeches makes much more sense when you interpret his character through this lense: Gman is an employee of Valve, and the "job" and "services" that he has Gordon provide are as an entertainer, specifically a video game protagonist.

You can watch all of the Gman speeches here, and try to interpret Gman's employers as meaning Valve and his "services" as meaning video games, and it all makes sense.

I'll go through the video with timestamps to offer interpretation:

0:40 Gman is saying that Valve believes "Gordon" to have potential for a video game series. Meaning a sequel to Half-life. In a way, the Gman choice at the end of Half-life was actually Valve asking the players if they're interested in a Half-life Series.

3:25 Not much, but Gman is saying that he's saving Adrian in case Valve decides to tap him later. Notice that Gman did not specifically offer Adrian a Job, because they had no immediate plans to make another game with him. He's just an asset they're holding onto in case he's useful later.

5:40 Gman mentions offers he's received for Gordon's services. Valve did indeed entertain the idea of letting 3rd party developers work on Half-life episodes, but they were never released due to the breakdown of the episodic model.

9:02 Hypothetically, following the theory, this means that there was disagreement in the HL2 development team on the inclusion of Alyx in HL2. And, obviously, this also means that Alyx is one of Valve's investments (not specifically gman) and this would be proven to be correct, as we find out later in Half Life Alyx.

9:44 Valve is tasking Gordon with building Alyx as a character in order to repay for his "survival" (his continued appearances in future episodes/games). It's obviously quite a bit of work for Valve to include Gordon as a character.

And perhaps the deepest take of them all:

Gman, the Valve employee, was imprisoned in the Vault, and unable to make Half Life games until Alyx came along.

11:20 Gman says his "employers" disagree that fate is inflexible. Clearly this references Valve retconning Eli's death mere moments later. This line just means that Valve is okay with retcons.

11:48 Alyx, as an in-universe character, clearly would ask for the combine to leave earth. But Gman works for Valve, and that's not in their best interests. Plus, that would mean retconning the whole of Half-life 2.

    And finally...

13:49 Valve finally admits that Gordon is not the suitable protagonist for future narratives it wants to tell. He's unable to perform those roles. Valve struggled to find another protagonist. But they tapped Alyx as a character to fill that role.
