Does the Combine have any enemy empires?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 06:30 PM PST

Potentially highly stupid question, but does anyone think that the Combine has any enemy space empires? They seem to have a lack of desire to spend much resources on Earth, so I felt that they may be in a war, and wish not to spend resources on unnecessary things.

A Discussion About Half-Life 1 and 2's Weapon Sound Design

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 09:47 PM PST

The sounds of the weapons in HL1 and 2 intrigues me a lot. Like, in HL1 you can excuse the sounds not sounding "realistic" to being a quirk of the technology at the time, but in Half-Life 2 every weapon deliberately sounds extremely strange, but also extremely unique.

I think the overall community refusal of the HD pack for HL1 proves those crunchy, unrealistic, stylish sounds have something special about them, and while I don't think HL2 quite captures the same audio magic, it's still undeniably Half-Life 2 whenever you hear one of those weapons fire off. The pistol in HL2 in particular has always stood out to me as a gun that just does not sound good, and yet I would never replace the audio for it, because nothing else in the world captures how that pistol sounds.

In HL2, the shotgun has a springy noise for every loaded shell, the revolver punches far harder than it needs to, the SMG is sharp and doesn't quite sound right, just like the reloading for the pistol, which creates the audio equivalent of the uncanny valley effect.

The fact that every gun in both Half-Life 1 and 2 sounds so particular to itself is of course not a coincidence, it's no doubt a conscious design decision to give each gun its own identity. And yet still, they went so far with it that each sound rings in my head years after playing these games. They are truly iconic sounds, regardless if each and every one of them is actually good.

I would kill to find out what their process was for designing the audio of these weapons. Nothing comes close. Even the weapons in Half-Life Alyx don't quite stack up.

Obviously the Half-Life games do much more than just sound design to set them apart, but what do you guys think? I want to hear more opinions on this
