    Possibly unpopular opinion: I think the original HL had too many unnecessary weapons.

    I say "possibly" because I'm not sure if it is or not. However, I stick by what I say, that the first game has way too weapons that aren't very useful

    Like you've got your mainstay weapons; pistol, SMG, shotgun, etc. Those are fine obviously. It's when you start getting into the periphery other some of the other weapons that their necessity becomes harder to see.

    Take something like the tripmine. Ask yourself, how often do you actually make use of it in a meaningful way? Especially when you compare it to another relatively similar weapon, the satchel charge, which is much more useful IMO. Or take another weapon like the Hivehand, which is frankly one of the most useless guns, since it's damage isn't that great. It's a neat idea that doesn't serve a good purpose when compared to another Xen weapon, the Snark, which you can use to distract enemies and take out a room with.

    This doesn't apply to every weapon; I think the Gluon Gun strikes a good balance of being more powerful than the Tau Cannon but draining more ammo, giving you good incentive to use the TC instead. But there's just a lot of weapons that don't serve a good use, and often feel like they're there just to be there.

    Compare with HL2. Pretty much every weapon is useful and serves a good purpose. The cut-down arsenal means that each weapon plays a role they are designed to excel at and given purpose. Even a weapon you might consider extraneous, like the Antlion Spore, is at least given a level to shine in and be very useful.

    Am I saying that you can't enjoy some of these weapons I think are useless? Absolutely not some like the Hivehand add charm to the game. But I think much of HL1s arsenal reads more as quantity over quality.
