Posted: 04 May 2021 02:09 PM PDT I'm sure this has been discussed a lot, and I just want to add my two cents. I've heard theories and speculation, including one in particular that most of the human population retreated into cities in the wake of the Resonance Cascade, followed by Citadels being teleported right into the cities, with their armies spreading out from their catching everyone completely unaware. The ground around the Citadel is so neatly-cut that teleporting it would make sense. Everyone always wants to know how the war was so short, and it's usually chalked up to overwhelming odds, which does make sense. Having enemy troops pop into the middle of major cities would be a huge problem. I had a thought though. The Combine loves recycling. Waste not, want not. An invading force would not want to destroy all of our infrastructure, and the casualties caused by the war would be bad for business. Imperialist states never want to replace the local government, they move in, set up shop, and try to keep the existing power structure because that's just easier. Why make new tax offices for instance when the IRS is already there? Even with Xen teleportations, there would still be so much infrastructure left over, as well as trained staff and warm bodies. As many humans as there would be left over after a major conflict, there would only be so many and they wouldn't be reproducing. So that loses you a ton of money. That, and considering how heavily-armed the humans are, even considering overwhelming odds there are problems that angry spiteful humans could cause; you don't want them ruining any resources for you. Fighting back would certainly get a ton of these very useful humans, with their combat skills and technical skills wiped out. You lose universities, science, machinery, you lose more people to turn into stalkers. Why wipe out a billion when they're so valuable? I thought of a joke in the most recent Freeman's Mind, that the Combine killed everyone who was competent and what's left is what we got. I also thought about how we don't see virtually any military veterans; Colonel Cubbage's claims are dubious at best. Furthermore, they have to improvise RPGs from civilian equipment, and even the Combine guys are using what amounts to police weaponry today. No AK-47s or 74s, no M4s, the only rifles they've got are alien. And we don't see much other power armor, despite it apparently being mass produced. So based on this evidence, here's my thought. What if all the best soldiers and scientists, along with their equipment, were simply taken away, leaving a handful of people who were lucky enough to escape detection or were considered too low-level to be a threat? What better way to avoid resistance than to prevent them from being able to fight at all? What if the major military bases, units, and ships, were completely decimated because the Combine simply teleported them out? And not into deep space either. We see at the end of Half Life 1 that an HECU unit was teleported into Xen along with the chunk of desert they were fighting on. What if most of the militaries of Earth were teleported away to another dimension and enslaved by the Combine to be cannon fodder in some other invasion, leaving the handful who remained to be wiped out and enslaved on Earth? After all, despite the casualties, the humans could hold their own in a fight for at least a little while. Freeman and Shepherd certainly proved that with the right expertise and training their modern technology was formidable, if only as the Combine equivalent of light infantry. More than that, what if major universities, labs, and scientific research centers were taken away as well, to help the Combine try to understand how this little world made such an important breakthrough? Even the mighty Combine couldn't figure out the teleportation Earth had. Is the Nimitz out there somewhere on another planet launching souped-up F-16s, desperately trying to protect the Marines in worn-out PCVs, who may, for all they know, be the last of humanity? Perhaps MIT is out there somewhere, most of the staff executed for trying to keep the enemy from getting access to their teleportation work. So this is why there are so few heavy weapons, so few soldiers and scientists. They weren't dead(at first), they were just gone. Divisions, fleets, whole fighting forces just taken away. Entire universities, chunks of labs, pulled into another dimension. The enemy wanted to take everything we had. Perhaps they'll find their way home someday. However many handfuls of survivors remain. Perhaps this is what Shepherd's been up to all this time. [link] [comments] | ||
