Does anyone else find the opening sequence in hl2 to be... Odd?

Starting with the trainstation, where you can't get out without being taken by a cp for questioning or sent to Nova Prospekt

The "pick up that can" part that can only be accessed by jumping off a window in a questioning room

The Fact that Barney never tells you where Kleiners Lab is, but you stumble onto it anyways after going into apartments that conveniently lead right to the lab

The Lab itself, which apparently has a small workspace, a little room with an HEV suit for Gordon Freeman, who disappeared 20 years ago, and another small room with only a teleporter inside and barely any space to work on it

Oh and the secret lab also has windows leading directly outside

[Discussion] Things referenced in the previous games that we may witness or get answers to in Half Life Alyx

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 04:28 AM PST

Ive seen a few people here talk about what could possibly show up in HL Alyx (that was implied or referenced in the other HL games) but I think having it all in one thread is more convenient. Ill start off with some stuff below. Correct me if Im wrong or if you have other ideas.

Here are some things off the top of my head that were referenced in HL2 and the episodes that may show up in HL:A

    • How Alyx and the BM team got transfered into City 17 in the first place

    • How Kleiners lab and BM East got assembled/created

    • Alyx at the White forrest base (Ep 2 implies a couple of times she was there before)

    • How the Vorts and rebels joined sides

    • That head in a jar at BM East that Eli mentions Alyx brought over

    • Early, smaller phases of Dog

    • How Eli lost his leg

    • How Alyx got her glowy hack-everything USB stick

    • Where the Gravity gun came from

    • Whatever drama caused Alyx and Mossman to hate each other

    • Ravenholm and why they dont go there anymore (well we know why, but the way Alyx says it implies she was probably there at least once before it went to hell)

    What did I miss?

Keep in mind that Im not saying these will probably show up. By the looks of the trailer the game will probably take place only within C17. Consider this thread more of a brainstorming exercise- what are all the things that were referenced to have happened?

Half-Life: Alyx has made me extremely optimistic for the future of VR.

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 12:39 PM PST

I completed the first half-life game just before the announcement for HLA, as my first playthrough of the series. Even with the limited amount of storytelling in the game, I absolutely loved it, and I am loving half life 2 right now. I've been on the fence about buying VR for a while now, and the recent announcement has convinced me, I even built a computer for it. Not only because the amazing look of the game, but the opportunities that arise from it.

As many have already said: half life has been extremely influential on the way video games can be used as a catalyst to deliver an amazing story, and I feel that HLA will follow this trend of changing the way people look at video games. VR has been pretty niche, even though it's been out since 2016. No company has been willing to make a huge risk for a VR game, because of the uncertainty that is tied with it.

With HLA in development, and the release of source 2 tools to the public, more community based content will arise, and more people will be inclined to join the VR community. Counter Strike is a mod of Half-Life. Look at where it is now. The potential this game holds is extremely high, and it is difficult for me to describe how excited I am to see how this all works out.

I'm sorry if there are any other posts similar to this one, I just wanted to write out how I was feeling.

Interesting but unlikely Half-Life Alyx theory

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 06:56 PM PST

Ok so we basically know that this game will somehow tie into the events of episode 2:

    1. Eli says "close your eyes honey" in the trailer, and a vortigaunt refers to Alyx preventing "his fate"

    2. The devs recommend that you play episode 2 beforehand.

There's a general theory that time travel is involved, and the X in the title looking like a Feynman diagram seems to support that. But how exactly would that work?

    Here's my idea:

After Eli's death, Alyx and Gordon go out to find the Borealis, but the combine follow them and are close behind. To prevent the combine from getting it, they quickly activate it, sending it to an unknown location.

It turns out, it actually went back in time to the early days of the combine's rule, in a much easier to find location. The combine managed to find it and encase it in a sort of vehicle so they can transport it as they study its technology (this is the floating thing we see in the trailer when the title pops up. It's also the weapon that can defeat the combine that's refered to by the new character). So, Alyx tried to get to the Borealis and use it to defeat the combine earlier than Gordon ever could.

This essentially creates a paradox, splitting the time into two universes: one where the combine win, and one where they're stopped before Gordon even shows back up.

Obviously, there's a lot of liberties that can be taken with this. For instance, what if Alyx doesn't succeed? What if this is still the same universe, and a time loop is created where the Borealis keeps being sent back in time?

I really can't wait to see whatever valve does with the plot, even if it's not remotely like this. Let me know what you think of this, I'm really interested in theories about this game.

Best way to play the Half Life Collection as a pure HL virgin?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 03:35 PM PST

    Hello all,

I just purchased the HL collection during Autumn Sale in preparation for HL Alyx coming this march, and was wondering what the most enjoyable way to play the games might be?

Would it just be chronologically in order of release? Would i be better off just watching lets-plays of the earlier games due to how spoiled i am by modern games?

    your insight is much appreciated.

We get it, Half Life Source is bugged to hell, but that doesn't mean you should nuke a post about hls with "play black mesa" or "play original" I'm probably going to get negative attention from this and thats fine.

    Smod tactical?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 10:58 AM PST

This is probably very old, but I've been dyyyyyying to play smod tactical (and regular smod) again. Last I remember, the mod was killed due to the orange box patch many years ago, and since then I've tried project life and various other "fixes" that don't actually work. They usually break in the middle of the campaign or straight up crash. Does anyone have any kind of fix?
