    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 08:33 AM PST

We've added a new temporary rule: "Posting spoilers or leaks of Half-Life: Alyx will result in an immediate ban. After March 23, any posts containing spoilers must be marked as spoiler using Reddit's built-in spoiler warnings."

If you're using the new advanced text editor that comes with the redesign, you can just click the "spoiler" button.

Otherwise, use this: >!spoiler text goes here!<
which displays as this: spoiler text goes here

Please report any posts you see breaking the rules.

Citizen notice: Failure to cooperate will result in permanent off-world relocation.

That being said, we're open to feedback and suggestions!

Finished The Main 4 Games for the First Time... Now I'm Stuck With the Rest of You

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 06:10 PM PST

I had never played the Half Life games, until a few weeks ago when I heard all of them would be free on Steam because of Half Life: Alyx's release. Half-Life was great, probably my favorite, because of how impressive it was for the time. Being inside Black Mesa gave such an eerie feeling that I crave now, and I plan on playing the game again at some point. HL2 was equally as good, and where the G-Man got increasingly mysterious and creepy. I thought the cliffhanger at the end of HL2 was definitely extreme, but it wasn't quite what I was expecting. I actually wasn't aware there were two more games after HL2 upon finishing it. After some research on the ending I quickly found about episode 1 and 2 and picked them up. I've just finished Episode 2. Nearing the end of Ep 2 I knew the events launching the rocket went too smoothly, and something had to go wrong. At that point I was expecting another chapter, maybe a crash in the helicopter, maybe Eli giving Gordon some heavy hitting information. But the quick dispatch of Alyx's father by the Advisor and the abrupt credits actually made me slam my fist on my desk. I get it now. Dammit.

What a franchise though, I'm so glad I finally got to experience it. I'll definitely try to play Blue Shift and Opposing Force to soothe the itch I have to play more HL1, but I know they won't be the same as this rollercoaster that was these 4 games. Bring on Half Life 3!

    What if Half-Life: Alyx flops?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 04:46 PM PST

I know the game will be probably a very, very good game. However, what if it really just doesn't impress the majority of people and be a disappointment? What would be the consequences to the Half-Life Franchise as well to the VR industry?

I think many people bought the Index just for Half-Life: Alyx, wouldn't it result in a big shitstorm or maybe people would want to refund their Index?

Edit: Use your imagination. We all know it won't be a flop. Just curious what the world would look like if it flops.

    Opposing Force Unused Sprite?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 10:41 PM PST

    Weird question.

I heard there were some unused content. One was a sprite that is literally like a little fairy.

Is that unused 'sprite' still can be found in the game files even in the Steam version?

    Edit: it was titled: sprite_01.spr

Are you using a little baby potato computer? Need to squeeze out some more gamer FPS for your gamer gaming? Can't get stable gameplay on your graphing calculator?

Just wanna make your game look like hot garbage?

Well, fret not! With an average ModDB rating of 2.5, Half Life: Ultra Low has you covered!

My new config file will net you up to 30 more FPS at the measly cost of your eyeballs! Even better, the new compressed textures will make you want to uninstall instantly as you realize it really isn't worth it. As for the new models and sprites, just know that Valve made them and actually released them, proof that we all start from the bottom.

    [OC] Unforeseen Consequences

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 06:14 PM PST

What are the odds that characters that survived the Black Mesa incident would all survive and end up in the same place?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 01:37 PM PST

For example, Eli, Kleiner, Breen, Barney, Gordon, Magnusson. I may be missing some but they all survived the Black Mesa incident, survived the seven hour war (excluding Gordon) and ended up in or around City 17. Those odds would have to be slim to none. Would anybody be able to do the math on that? I'm very curious

Dr. Breen's reaction to the Uprising, a manifestation of his foolishness (and the Combine's lack of interest on Earth) or just silly choices made for the story by the writers?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 09:08 AM PST

I don't know if I'm just stupid or I'm really onto something here.

I've always wondered why Breen didn't just finish off Freeman and the Resistance during the early half of the game or during a few periods of time he COULD have called for reinforcements. I mean, the OVerwatch (as good as they were in doing their job) were most likely not good enough to handle someone like Gordon.

A man who was famed to have defeated the entire forces of a highly-trained marine unit + the Black Ops AND hordes of invasive aliens from another dimension (even going as far as fighting them in their own dimension) alongside killing a fetus-shaped elder god with many insane magical powers (like opening portals or electrocuting people out of his giant fingertips Darth Sidious-style).

Was Breen REALLY that dumb? Surely, he HAS to have heard of Freeman's accomplishments (Since it's CONFIRMED in-game that he was aware of Freeman's messianic status in the minds of citizens and actions in Black Mesa). And even if he WAS that dumb (which he most likely was, judging from his Breencasts in Nova Prospekt in which he undermined and underestimated Freeman's rank and accomplishments), he should've changed his mind when Gordon raided Nova Prospekt.

I mean, think about it? Who could've pulled off such a task as raiding Nova Prospekt? Especially, leading an entire army of Antlion Soldiers? I'm convinced no one besides a messianic figure like Gordon could do that. With that said, if Breen had underestimated before, why didn't he changed his views and STILL treated Gordon as a minor 'inconvenience'? Despite flat-out witnessing or hearing about all the destruction and the carnage that the scientist is capable of.

Furthermore, why didn't the Advisors do something about it? Maybe ADVISE Breen to take heavier precautions and call for help? Y'know? *Like what they were SUPPOSED to do as ADVISORS?* I'm sure the Shu'ulathoi are a REALLY intelligent species and if they are, they should probably have been more careful when trying to contain someone like the One Freeman as well as fighting a persistent threat like the Resistance with hopes as high as the sky.

Wouldn't it be easier for them to just call the Combine for help right after Freeman's raid of Nova Prospekt. According to the game, he only arrived at Kleiner's Lab a few weeks after the raid and those precious weeks could've been used by the Overwatch to open a Portal Storm or perhaps a Superportal for a Combine reinforcement army to pour through.

Think about it, call the Combine for help, sweep most of Earth clean of the Resistance (which includes destroying White Forest), Gordon and Alyx returns to find the Resistance (still existent) but in ashes and scattered around the planet, confront the 2 'heroes' with both the Overwatch AND the Combine reinforcements. Then just execute them publicly which crushes any hope in the hearts of citizens left.

Problem solved. No need for street wars and no need to even destroy the Citadel of City 17.

To address why the Advisors didn't advise Breen to take Freeman seriously despite knowing what he's capable of, they (and by extension, the rest of the Combine) could just NOT be taking Earth and it's inhabitants seriously. Maybe they just view Earth as a backwater 'world' to steal resources from but not of any other importance, this kind of confirms a theory I've heard that the Combine didn't care about Earth, only it's resources which was why they didn't bother sending any help.

But since the game itself never mentions the Combine 'stealing' Earth's resources (which was a plot point used in the beta), I'm just gonna assume that the theory is wrong.

Maybe the actions of the 'baddies' in HL2 are made like that because Valve focuses more on gameplay than story. Which explains stuff like missing a helmet and various 'retcons' Valve has made to the story. Still, if it is just a silly writing choice then IMO, it kinda makes HL2 look a bit... ridiculous (not in a bad way, but in a comedic way) for me.

Anyways, what do you think? Do you agree with this?
