Small detail about vortigaunts in half life alyx

    Posted: 04 Apr 2020 06:21 PM PDT

So in half life Alyx we meet the vortigaunt who is cut off from the vortessence and foreshadows Eli's death. At the time alyx is led to believe Eli will die while captured, but we as the player assume it is referring to the time Eli dies at the end of episode 2. By the end of the game, it turns out that those events have changed so the death no longer occurred. This means that either, the Vort is referring to Eli's death in a future half life game, the vort is wrong, or my theory:

Because this vort is cut off from the vortessence, it no longer is experiencing all time at the same moment. It is experiencing time linearly like humans, but it still remembers everything it knew before it was cutoff. And the timeline its memories are from, is before Gman changed the future. So this vort remembers everything about the timeline where Gman and Alyx don't prevent Eli's death. So when the vort says Eli is already dead, its wrong because its memories are out of date with the current timeline. This also leads me to think that the reasons vortigaunts are the foil for Gman is because they are the only beings that are coterminus in this universe. Eliminating the vorts, and his (or his employer's) only foil might also have been the reason for causing the resonance cascade in Black Mesa.

This could all be wrong though, given the vort does say 'Alyx Vance alone cannot prevent Eli's fate' which could mean it is aware that alyx vance + Gman are required which would mean it knows of both timelines, but these are just my 2 cents. What are your thoughts?

[Alyx Spoilers] [Theories] The Future of Free Man

    Posted: 04 Apr 2020 05:08 PM PDT

After what happened in the ending of Alyx, some people believe that Gordon Freeman is losing the importance of the main character in the series, and some of them are afraid of this. Now I want to tell my opinion that the ending Alix only increases the significance of the personality of Gordon Freeman in the Half-Life universe. (Italics font used for Vortigaunts in-game quotes)

G-Man loses control of Gordon Freeman in Episode One when the Vortigaunts break the bond between him and G-Man. If you carefully review it, you will notice that G-Man is not angry on Vortigaunts and their move, he turns his gaze and wrath directly at Freeman and says staring him in eyes, "We'll see about that." As if it was not the Vortigaunts plan, but was a will and decision of Freeman himself, and G-man blames him personally for this. In the Episode Two, he makes a deal with him as his equal, so that Freeman escort Alix to the White Forest. In the end of Half-Life Alyx, he declares that Freeman "went rogue" and did not want to continue to work for him, which only confirms these speculations. I assume that it was a free-will decision of Freeman himself which was understood by the Vortigaunts in some telepathic way through, and G-Man was able to notice it. As we can see in their quotes, the Vortigaunts established a strong alliance and connection with this man, they may as well see his essence and decided to follow him along his path.

"Unity of purpose, the shattering of common shackles, a single road we tread."

"We are a tapestry woven of vortessence. It is the same for you if only you would see it."

"We are you, Freeman. And you are us."

It is also worth mentioning how the Vortigaunts refer to the characters in the series. It is noticeable that the Vortigaunts have the habit of calling characters by their full names as "Alyx Vance" or "Eli Vance," with the exception of Gordon Freeman whom they only call "The Freeman," which is interesting, because many characters (even G-Man) call him using Gordon / Doctor / Mr. Freeman in different ways, however, the Vortigaunts, who, like G-Man are able to see out-of-the boundaries of time, never do this and call him only by his surname as if "The Free Man" is his both title and status. It is he who is the symbol and leader of the Resistance and, as the Vortigaunts indicate, because he was able to defeat the lesser master (Nihilant), he can defeat the greater one (Combine). This character does not lose, but only develops his own self for the future struggle, and therefore Eli tells him that they have a lot of work ahead, which indicates that we continue the path of Gordon Freeman.

"That sharp spur of hope has not dulled to this day. For once the lesser master lay defeated, we knew the greater must also fall in time."

"With you besides us, a talisman of victory, the day of freedom draws nigh."

"We have endured these chafing bonds for eons, yet a single moment of further servitude seems intolerable!"

"Let this war end in either total victory or our extinction. No further compromise shall we allow."

Alyx is indeed a great choice for G-Man. She is a capable, but kinda naive person and can be easily manipulated, unlike Gordon.

("I'm afraid you misunderstand the situation, Ms. Vance") - G-man to Alyx before hiring.

("You've proved yourself a decisive man, so I don't expect you'll have any trouble deciding what to do. If you're interested, just step into the portal and I will take that as a yes.") - G-Man to Freeman before hiring.

At the same time, the fate of Adrian Shephard remains unknown, and it is not clear whether the Valve will introduce him in the plot further or not. Eli is going to kill G-Man and probably Gordon decided to do as well. If they choose this path and if we assume that Adrian Shephard appears in the future, then in my opinion the best use that G-Man can find for him is release him to mecilessly slaughter Vortigaunts. Shepard was a dark horse during the incident, he was a "foreigner" to Black Mesa and was fighting against the mass of aliens when the rest of the people in the complex were mostly dead or evacuated, so he remains a little-known (or unknown) person among the Resistance.

For the above reasons, one of G-Man best moves could be deceive and deploy Shephard to attack Vortigaunts (and he's damn good at this, i doubt there can be a better suitable man for this job). His coming can possibly be both unexpected and devastating for them, this way G-Man has a trump card against Freeman's strong allies.

That's all i have for the moment, so i want to know what do you think of these theories and what interesting you can add to it, so let's speculate more about incredible lore of Half-Life.

(And sorry if my English wasn't good enough or there are some misspellings since i'm not native to this and i'm writing it late at night)
