I’ve tried for so long. How do I get though this door in HL2 EP1? It’s in the chapter ‘lowlife’.

One thing I love about Half-Life Alyx

is how it uses space and time to immerse you in its world and story. Of course, it's not the only game that does this (the layout of Black Mesa in HL1, and the Half-Life 2 menu animated backgrounds are also brilliant), but here it's done in such a beautiful and deliberate way that I've been thinking about it ever since I beat the game.

You start in City 17, in a foggy early morning. Go to the safehouse, get caught, then go to Russell's home and take a train to the QZ. By the time you arrive there it's about midday. Save your dad, keep going to the Vault, by the time you arrive at the distillery and meet Jeff, it's noon and you can see the sunset. Then the final chapters take place at night.

Even in chapters that take place mostly underground or inside buildings, there are a few areas where you have to go outside and see the sky. You can always tell what time it is just by looking at the sky and the shadows. The whole thing is just one day, and since the game takes about 12h an average playthrough, you can play it almost in real time. There's even a song in the soundtrack called "Thirty-Seven After Six" so we can tell almost exactly when the game starts.

And then there is the Vault. From the first chapter where you see it, it's always there in the horizon, an imposing presence. And as you make your way towards it, it gets bigger and bigger. By the time you reach it, it really feels like you've been walking for miles, always with a clear goal in mind.

The voiceover with Russell and Eli also reminds you of the urgency of your mission, and it makes you feel like they're making progress in their research alongside you.

And of course, there is the map in the loading screen, showing your progress in the game. There you can clearly see all the places you've already been through and how close you are to your goal. It makes the QZ a real, tangible place inside City 17.

All of these elements together make you, the player, feel like you just went through this one big adventure, in a real place over real time, with an amazing payoff at the end. Not to mention the beautifully crafted environments, sound design and animations. It's one of the most immersive gaming experiences ever.

Am I going to be lost playing Alyx?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 05:05 PM PST

I've never played a half life game or seen a play through of it.

I just bought Half Life: Alyx and can't wait to play it.

Am I going to be lost playing it?

I know it takes place before Half Life 2 but idk if that matters much in my situation
