    Ok, so I just found out about this subreddit.

    I'm 100% new in this franchise. Never played any game, I'm not familiar with the story or anything like that. But you know what? I always wanted to be. And today is the day.

    After years of wanting to know more about this franchise, my time to play it has come. I got some extra money and went straight to the store to pick up a Steam Gift Card. There is currently a Road Trip sale, so I can afford basically all the titles in the series.

    But I don't know where to start! After searching for "Half-Life" on Steam, I'm met with numerous different tiles. Some of them are games, some are comics, some seem to be updates. What do I do now?

    I came across this title named: "Half-Life: Complete" and I would imagine this is the collection I'm looking for to play the story-related content, right?

    I'm only aware that the franchise is divided into episodes. So, the title "Half-Life 2" is not the same as "Half-Life 2: Episode One and Episode Two"?

    I really need some help here, guys...

    The thing that I most appreciate about Alyx is that it justifies gas masks

    Anyone aware of Half Life's development knows that Combine wearing gas masks is a left-over of the beta era of Half Life 2 when the atmosphere was supposed to be compromised. That idea was dropped, but from a designer perspective, dropping the idea makes a ton of new work. It means you have to make all the faces and animate them for every soldier. So Valve simply left the gas masks in to save time and effort, and Half Life 2 thus had this strange feature where all the Combine wear gas masks...ALL the time, with no real clear justification as to why.

    ...that was until Alyx came out

    Now we have a reason: Xen Spores.

    ​

    It's probably one of the biggest fixes Alyx does for me in the lore. The reason all Combine wear gas masks is Xen fauna and flora and all their gross spores are still all over the place. It makes the game have a deeper lore. Like the first combine human soldiers made were probably dealing with a chaotic and messy situation where Xen life was far less contained and spread all over the place. You can imagine the gas mask becoming part of a standard outfit in this post-Resonance world. And that even as Xen life was contained and things cleaned up into localized quarantine zones, perhaps the gas mask remained part of the outfit...just in case, you know?

    It fixes a that initial compromise in the original HL2. It justifies the gas mask and makes it suddenly obvious why all combine are issued it. Because for every raid on an apartment block, or arrest of a scavenger in the wilderness, you can never know if there are spores in a closet, or in a sneeze.
