I have spent the last 5 years of my life as a music producer and I must say this about HL:A

    Posted: 02 Aug 2020 12:38 PM PDT

Half life Alyx has the best audio I've ever heard. The music towards the last chapter had me blown away. Playing the game through the Index with the amazing sound quality of the Index speakers was a huge plus. I will never forget what I saw or heard. It reminded me of the soundtrack to the movie "Annihilation". The big distorted bass was just nuts. Good job Valve. I don't see any company topping this game for the next 10 years aside from you guys.

What was your reaction when your weapons were confiscated and destroyed in Half-Life 2?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2020 06:21 PM PDT

I'd like to know what your reaction was when you saw all your weapons completely disintegrate in the Confiscation Field? Also, a bonus question; how did you feel when you first got the Supercharged Gravity Gun? I'd love to see what people thought.

I personally thought it was kinda horrifying to see all my weapons and my ammo completely vanish. What about you?

I suck at fps and half life 1 is extremely frustrating

    Posted: 02 Aug 2020 06:24 PM PDT

Hello, console gamer here that was never allowed to play fps while growing up and I just got a computer and am trying to play through half life 1 after completing both portal games. I am not used to keyboard and mouse controls and I suck at fps in general.

I've heard HL is incredible and I love the portal games so I wanted to give it a try. I'm playing the original HL and am currently on On A Rail and am just struggling to have fun. every combat encounter is very tense and unenjoyable because the controls are awkward and my aim is terrible.

    TL;DR

I suck at fps and half life is not very fun right now. Got any tips on how to not suck and enjoy this game?

Deep Blue Sea feels like a Half-Life Movie [spoilers within]

    Posted: 02 Aug 2020 09:38 PM PDT

I was watching Deep blue Sea last night (my first time watching it in full), and I was surprised by how, at times, it felt a lot like Gordon Freeman traversing Black Mesa. To summarise the plot: * Aquatica is an off-shore research station, previously used by the Navy as a submarine pen. It's partially underwater, and depends on good weather to keep in contact with the surface.

    • Its primary use is the study of sharks that have been illegally modified to increase their intelligence, in order to stimulate a protein in their brains for medical research. The chief scientist is rushing the trials of said protein, in response to worries from her sponsors after a shark escaped and nearly ate a boat-ful of teens. Her subordinate repeatedly warns her about this, until she threatens his job.

    • During a squall, one of the sharks that has supposedly been tranquillised bites a researcher's arm off. During an emergency medical extraction, his stretcher is dropped in the water, and a shark uses it as a crude battering ram to attack the facility's windows.

    • The lowest levels begin flooding immediately, and the science team has to use their knowledge of the station's layout to find a safe route to the surface.

    • However, it's increasingly hinted that the sharks are far smarter than they first appear, and eventually, their strategy is made clear - by herding the survivors to the surface, they've forced them to open watertight doors and flood sections of the labs, causing the station to sink and pull down the fencing keeping them penned in, ultimately letting them escape.

So, let's see what we've got here: A facility far from civilisation doing shady experiments with lax safety procedures, which suffers a disaster. The survivors need to use their knowledge of physics to control the flooding around them, and are running from monsters that are more organised than they appear. The only thing they can't do is attack the monsters directly, and have to use environmental hazards, such as filling the kitchen with gas and igniting it to turn it into a blast pit.

In other words, they need to Run, Think, Shoot, Live.

    Half Life/Portal universe Theory:

    Posted: 02 Aug 2020 09:12 PM PDT

I have a bit of an odd theory about Portal that I thought might be interesting to share.

I was thinking about how Valve could further connect Portal and Half Life in any possible way and came across a few things. First of all, I recalled that The Combine's only real weakness is that they haven't mastered teleportation, maybe you can see where this is going. This got me thinking about how Aperture Science seems to have mastered an extremely precise, instantaneous method of teleportation that even works over great distances. It's interesting to me that Valve decided to specifically show this right at the end of Portal 2. This is when Chell shoots a portal onto the moon's surface to suck Wheatley through. This is great news, this means that with the help of Aperture Science, humanity might have a fighting chance against The Combine. But it would also be the end of it if The Combine got their hands on the technology.

Upon looking deeper, there seems to be a problem: You need the portal gun in order to create portals. This statement seems reasonable at first but I would say that it's incorrect. This is because portals are opened without the portal gun several times in both Portal and Portal 2, before you get your hands on the Aperture Science Dual Handheld Portal Device. It almost seems like Valve intentionally designed the functionality of portals to be the perfect defense against The Combine.

Second of all, there are a couple of interesting things when it comes to what we know about GLaDOS, or rather what we don't know. We don't really know much about her story other than the stuff dealing with Caroline and trying to kill everyone in the facility. This means that it's entirely possible she may have interacted with a certain man with a suit and briefcase called G-man. I came to this conclusion because of a detail in Portal relating to the radio. When the radio is "fizzled", it makes a rather odd noise which, when reversed, sounds like it says, "She lied to me" and forwards sounds like it says, "You are not alone". This, at first, seems a lot like your typical Doug Rattmann thing, but it makes more sense if it's G-man which I'll explain.

Firstly, it is G-man fashion to make an appearance through glitching technology. This is demonstrated several times in Half Life when he appears distorted for a single frame on the big screens in Half Life 2 while Dr. Breen is talking. Secondly, if it were Ratman moving the radio around, how would he get it back after it's fizzled multiple times throughout the game. G-man is the only being capable of grabbing an object out of time, or creating it again and again for that matter. Finally, in Portal 2, even though there are still signs of Ratman, the radio no longer makes this sound, even though its lights are on indicating not only station 85.2 FM, but that the batteries are still good.

So, If "She", in the phrase "She lied to me", refers to GLaDOS and it is G-man on the radio, It almost seems like GLaDOS was supposed to do something for G-man but decided not to for her own reason. This would make sense since G-man is notorious for interacting with people to orchestrate events. Several sightings of him demonstrate this in the Half Life universe where he can be seen talking to scientists and other people right from the start of Half Life 1. So if G-man was trying to get GLaDOS to do something, what was it?

Well, since the end of Half Life: Alyx, we know for certain that G-man's employers are interested in the success of The Combine to some degree since he refuses to get rid of them saying the task was "too large, given the interests of [his] employers". This points to G-man wanting to make a deal with GLaDOS in order to get technology of advanced and precise teleportation for The Combine. So if GLaDOS refused, he had to acquire it some other way. Perhaps through someone who he observed to be exceptionally skilled with the technology, Chell.

This explains his attempts at communicating with Chell, but why was he so discreet? Simple, GLaDOS had the whole facility completely under her control and saw/heard everything. GLaDOS may have killed the scientists in the first place to prevent G-man from making a deal with any of them. Once she realized that G-man was going to try and use Chell, she decided to kill her for the same reason.

Stretching things a little further, maybe, just maybe, the reason that GLaDOS forgot she was Caroline in the first place was because G-man forced her to in an attempt to get her to cooperate, getting rid of her care for humanity, but not her disinterest with this deal which explains why she was okay with killing so many people to prevent G-man from getting what he wanted.

But that's just a theory... A GAME THEORY!
