The vaporware day has finally come...

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 01:14 PM PDT

TLDR: In less than two days, Half-Life 2: Episode 3 will have been pending release for longer than Duke Nukem Forever. I made a quick page with a countdown, as a joke, about seven years ago and as the clock finally counts down I thought other people might get a laugh out of it as well. To save some clicks, the moment in question is Wednesday, September 2, 2020 at 10:00:01 UTC (by my calculations).

    https://arno-qs.gitlab.io/vaporware

Honestly, I never thought this day would come; when I initially made the thing, I was still drinking the Kool-Aid that the game would release eventually. Then, I figured if it did fade into memory, I wouldn't remember to take note of the day when it passed. But then Half-Life: Alyx came out and stirred up the pot, so here we are. :)

PS: I still haven't played HL:A yet, so please don't talk about it in the comments. Personally I'm fine with anything that's been in a press release, but other people want complete blackout.

Side note: if you go to the site with NoScript (or some other Javascript blocker) enabled, you won't see the countdown or any of the dynamic page elements. The page is designed to gracefully degrade, though, so you'll get the basic information so you can do your own math, just presented in a different form that doesn't look silly when it's not being dynamically updated by the page's scripting.

In search of any female HL fan who can somewhat replicate Kathy Levin's voice (she voiced the HEV suit, as well as Dr. Cross)

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 05:05 PM PDT

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMUQeMcbs7c&t=1s Auditioning includes using this video to replicate the HEV voice, as well as having a voice that could reasonably belong to Dr. Cross (who is 25 years old)

I did attempt to directly commission Kathy herself, but she is not allowed to record Half Life content due to some kind of contract (her words, not mine)

https://imgur.com/3UqXqJk here is my conversation with her, and what I attempted to commission her for

I'm willing to pay at the minimum 7 USD an hour equivalent (subject to negotiation, I will be using this voice quite a lot)

I just realized something sort of poetic

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 09:14 AM PDT

In episode 2, it's a revealed that Eli made a deal with the gman to save Alyx's life back in Black Mesa. Then in HLA, Alyx makes a deal with the gman to save Eli's life in the future.

It's sort of small but I found it interesting how both events parallel each other.

Half Life - Alyx: She was THE ONE all the time.

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 05:19 AM PDT

This is just a theory. It's a little long, but I think it's possible to be correct.

Well we've been playing through the eyes of Gordon Freeman for quite long, and the game make us think he is "the one, the savior" the principal character. But in therms of plot, Alyx may be the most important person in the universe, and G-man wanted her all along. To understand what happens in the end of Alyx, wee need to figure out somethings first:

-->What if G-man can only "hire" a person if in some level it's the person choice?
It's kinda implicit really. G-man give us this sense he is almos omnipotent being, but he is not a slaver. Have you noticed how every time he accquires someone services, the person in question is about to die (generally in a huge explosion)?

    • When he first contacted Gordon, the Nihilant is going all supernova.
    • When he gets Adrian Shepard, there is a nuclear device exploding nearby.
    • When he try to get Gordon again, Breen's tower is collapsing.

Everybody he gets is dying, except from Alyx. Her case is different. We will get to that.

-->Everybody that was hired had a choice or a debt of life.
G-man just give everybody a choice to serve or not. But he does it in such a meticulous and ardilous way, waiting to the persons only choices are a deadend between accept service or die/let die.

-->Gordon Freeman was "incappable or unwilling" of accomplish the tasks... REALLY?
This is the most bullshit G-man ever says. We are guided to assume he is referencing the fact the Vortigaunts interfeered with time to stop G-man to put Gordon in a stasys again. But is it?

It makes no sense to say Gordon was either incompetent or unwilling through all the events in gameplay. First things first, Gordon Freeman acconplished every task he was given with maestry and without questions!

    • The G-man sets him to the course of the killing of the Nihilant - He did it.
    • G-man wakes up Gordon and sets him to kill Dr. Breen - Gordon did it perfectly.
    • When the Vorts rewinded time and prevented the G-man from hiring him again, it was by no choice of Gordon, really, nobody asked anything, they just show up and grab him and Alyx and give G-mna a finger.
    • Even after the Vorts interference, once they are "occupied", and G-man lay one more task on Gordon, (to take Alyx safe to White Forest) he just do it, with maestry and no questioning.

In fact, when you stop to think, Gordon do anything anyone tells him to do with maestry and without questions. From Vortigauts to PHD doctors, form ominous galxy buisiness man to crazy Priests. He just go with the flow and never disapoints. Or at least in the events we saw until now.

-->All that happened until now was so G-man could hire Alyx all along!
Lets look at the clues. Assuming the G-man can only hire someone if it is willing to be hired or owns him some favor.

When he saves Alyx from Black Mesa, she is just a child, and has not full responsabilities from her actions and choices. Her father argues back and refuses to let her be hired at the time. G-man won't admit it openly, but he could not get her to work back there without permission form her legal guardian.

Now, one could argue G-man could had got Alyx when the Combine Hunter nearly kills her. But there are few points that shows it is not the case.

    • No other hired person is dying litteraly. They are more like about to die. G-man has never healed anyone, has he?
    • Alyx has been a freedom fighter almost her entire life, she is basically the resistance incarnated, I don't think she would trade her freedom for servitude to save her own life. she is too strong-minded. We see it in HLA, she is the only one that is unwilling and screaming to be set free after G-man finally gets her.

G-man had never a chance to get her. She is too agile to be almost dying from the right condictions. The only chance this happens - when Dr. Breen turns into Fireworks - The Vorts interfeered and prevent it. When the Advisors got to them and killed Eli, well, the advisors themselves can possibly block G-man. I guess he don't want direct confront with them, since we discovered G-man can be at least captured.

--->But then why all this time and mind paradox?
The only chance G-man had to get Alyx under his wing is through a debt. She will not freely agree to work. He cannot get to her in the future. She is ready to die and there are too many entitys to interfeer.

Conclusion: G-man sets them in the path Eli is killed. Than he somehow ever knowing as he is, get purposely captured in the past, so the younger Alyx can free him, and FINALLY he is free to form a link with her mind. And then he shows her father's death to her. She may not be willig to serve from exchange of her own life, but to save her dad she will do anything. This is true mind manipulation here. In saving him she is in debt.
G-man proceeds to smoothly erase her memory, put her past self back into the world, and switches to her older self. Thats why there is no butterfly effect, she just vanishes in the future, but everything that happened, happened. Eli figured this out really quick.

But Why her? We don't really know. Maybe because her mind is strong enough to question and refuse. Maybe if rightly motivated she can do something crucial in the future that Gordon Freeman and the others would not/are morally incappable of in the future. May it be that she has something special. It's yet to see.

if you read it through here, what do you think about that? does it makes sense?

How to get the "WON-version of Half-Life"?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2020 04:47 PM PDT

So recently, i got a video idea on doing a video about Counter Strike Beta 1.0, but when on the CS B 1.0 page, it said " Attention: You will need the original WON-version of Half-Life not earlier then v 1.0.1.6 in order to install and play this.
Also bear in mind that these CS versions are not compatible with the Steam-version of Half-Life."

I only have the steam version of HL1 and i dont know how to get the original WON version so can someone tell me on how to get it?
