Does anyone else feel, just as a feeling, like the Half Life / Portal universe is real life?

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 06:07 PM PST

Pretty much just what the title says.

It's not thinking or believing these video games are real life - you can discern reality from fiction just fine.

It's not that the world feels real - lots of settings have realized enough worldbuilding to feel real and this is something else.

It isn't about feeling so connected to the story that it's real to you. I have way more connection to Fallout's universe personally and New Vegas is so alive in my heart it is a real place to me, but that's not like the feeling with Half Life or Portal. With them it has nothing to do with connection or attachment.

It's like if you didn't know any better you'd think it's real life. It's so immersive it doesn't even need to immerse you to immerse you. It's so believable, suspension of disbelief works backwards on it - you have to actively try to suspend belief in order to see past the immersion, you never have to actively suspend disbelief to feel immersed. Think about that.

It doesn't even have to be realistic to seem real. Rather than unrealistic things happening, things happen that seem unrealistic, but they must not be unrealistic since they happened. Obviously that's not true - the games are human creations, they can have plot holes. But it feels like it only feels like they have plot holes, because real life can't really have plot holes and these games are real life even though they aren't really.

It's part of the desire to solve the mysteries of the story. It feels like for every mystery you solve in Half Life or Portal, a mystery in real life solves itself for you. I could swear from experience that actually happens.

It's like our world only exists to host this one. Like humans only exist to play Half Life and Portal. Like it's hard to tell why Valve isn't the biggest company on earth and instead they're just seen as a video game company when they own this amazing technology, except you have a human brain and you can remind yourself the world probably wasn't actually created just as packaging for this one video game world and it is actually just a video game with really good worldbuilding. Right? You're certain that's all it really is, it just feels so strange because it was designed to. Humans have fun speedrunning just because we naturally do randomly incidentally happen to find it fun, not because we are an algorithm designed to practice it.

What if 3 isn't going to be a game, it's going to be the day G Man wakes us all up?

When did I go from serious to exaggerating to joking? Did I?

    At this point...

...would you even expect a new mainline game to have an integer (like 3, 4, 5, etc.) in the title? Purely hypothetical.
