I feel as though the Black Mesa iteration of Nihilanth is far inferior to its HL1 counterpart

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 07:25 PM PDT

(Note, this is abridged from a YouTube comment I made on the subject, so apologies if any language isn't as concise as it should be. It should also be mentioned that I have not played Black Mesa, and that this analysis is based off of a recording of the beta version of the fight. With that said:)

I really feel as though the Black Mesa version of the Nihilanth fight falls very short compared to the original in a few ways. The HL1 fight is tedious and not very fun, but the atmosphere is completely unbeatable. The portal to the boss fight - unlike the rest of Xen - is pitch black and nearly empty, with abnormal tendril-like spikes around it shooting out flames from seemingly nothing. There are no enemies, obstacles, or significant amounts of health/ammo, which is something that is never happens throughout the entirety of the game post-intro. The complete void surrounding you, limited noise, lack of an exit portal, and small, ominous red teleporter to the boss fight is seriously nerve-racking. This iteration of the game takes a much more basic and, well, boring approach. Loud music, uncharacteristically large red teleporter, overbearing and relatively more natural/intentional appearing spikes surrounding it, and most significantly, a visible sky and set of unreachable islands, and dozens of other creatures present. There is no creepy aura, there is no "unknown" factor, it's just a clear indication that makes the player think "oh, here comes the boss". The atmosphere in that section is just taken away.

And then the fight. Again, gameplay-wise, it appears to be a massive improvement. The constant teleporting of the original fight, while a unique and interesting concept, was not fun to deal with. All the boss really entailed was shooting the three orange spikes (Which aren't exactly made obviously breakable. Like many things in Xen, it's hard to tell what to do immediately), spamming ammo in order of most-to-least powerful at him, and attempting to avoid the hassle that teleporting entailed. If you wanted, you could just hide behind a spike and hivehand it until it opened its head, with leftover bombs not used throughout the fight finishing him off for a free win. So, by all means, the Black Mesa version is an improvement.

However, again, the HL1 version DESTROYS this version in atmosphere. The Nihilanth is an amazing example of an eldritch horror. Deformed and ugly features, no clear emotion, massive size, quiet and eerie whispers, big ass hands, etc., etc. And to make this better, you are spawned in immediately next to him. You start on a Xen platform looking right at his massive body, already able to control your character, and unsure of what his abilities are. The island immediately breaks, leaving you dazed in a freefall, looking around the massive room for a clue as to what you need to do to escape the massive abomination in front of you. In this remake, you fall from the ceiling in a cutscene, nearly completely unable to even see Nihilanth. And, by the time you take control, you notice that you're not even being attacked yet. The boss is on the opposite side of the room (Appearing far smaller than the original by comparison), and with its arms at its side, it's clear you don't have to worry about being killed just yet. This is not a shocking or memorable beginning in the slightest. It especially doesn't help that, when you eventually can see him, he just looks goofy. Why does he have a shark mouth? Why does he have such an exaggerated grimace? The original darkened his features, making him seem ominous and indifferent. This one just makes it feel like another unintelligent grunt that you have to deal with, instead of a living being possibly far more powerful and significant than yourself.

And then there's the arena. Why is it so wide? There's no sense of claustrophobia at all, and, with large and free ammo refills present in the area, it makes the boss seem like something which is in no way a genuine, immediate threat. And where is the tall ceiling??? This fight almost completely deletes the vertical aspect. It seems as though you can't gain any significant height advantage, especially since Nihilanth stays at the top and center of the arena the entire time. It just makes for an incredibly boring and cookie-cutter arena gameplay-wise compared to the original. And the visuals don't help much either. The HL1 arena didn't make the whole room dark because the massive size of it (Along with the boss) helps to overwhelm you. The visuals are viscerally gross (Like much of Xen), and the fact that nothing is hidden means you have the need to frantically absorb and explore the whole area while also attempting to evade the boss' unknown attacks against you. These contribute significantly to the fight's atmosphere, and is what makes it interesting and daunting. The visuals in this arena are so dark, you can barely even see Nihilanth. You are really only focusing on your very immediate surroundings and the centerpiece, meaning there is nothing to absorb, and no real reason to move your cursor anywhere aside from Nihilanth. It looks like it would fit DOOM - a game intending to be hellish and gritty - far, far better than Half Life - a game which, especially within Xen, intends to be gross and unsettling. And don't get me started on Nihilanth's shield, and the rest of the technology surrounding him. Why are there so many clearly mechanical things within the arena? The original is completely organic, solely using things which naturally exist and grow in Xen. The fact that everything was organic and that Nihilanth was almost completely naked (aside from the mysterious metal object on him and his bracelets) is a big part of what made Xen Xen, and, once more, was something that would gross you out. In Black Mesa, the massive metal beams and spinning metal shields protecting the unoriginal massive healing crystals on each side of Nihilanth make him seem less powerful on his own, and make the arena seem just like every other boring "massive godlike creature in the center" boss fight just like any from the last two decades. This is even more prominent with the massive blue hexagon shield, which is both incredibly uninteresting and predictable, but which also puts a wall between you and Nihilanth, only continuing the theme of him not feeling like a real threat on his own.

In this version, he feels like a centerpiece you have to shoot at to win the fight, while avoiding what feels like the actual enemy: his attacks, which is something which is hard to make creepy. In the original, he himself has a clear and deeply terrifying presence in the room, which is why he feels substantial as a final enemy. I feel like the soul of the original is sapped in Black Mesa.

    Half life Alyx worth it?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 01:02 PM PDT

Hey everyone! I plan on buying the Oculus quest 2 since I have some spare money . Is Half life Alyx worth it? I tried VR at my dad's house and loved it but I only played beat saber and a fishing game. I do have a decent PC (5700, Ryzen 5 3600, 32GB ram, 750w). I'm looking forward to it and right now Alyx is on sale so wondering any of the drawbacks with the game. I know you'll probably say yes it is since I'm on the half life subreddit lol. Thank you.

EDIT: I learned you can't play on the Quest 2 with it. I don't have WiFi on my PC ethernet only, anyone know how I can do that?
