We're developers from the Half-Life: Alyx team. Ask us anything!

    Posted: 22 Jan 2020 08:51 AM PST

Hi r/HalfLife, we are a few members of the Half-Life: Alyx team at Valve. Here today from the team we have Robin Walker, Jamaal Bradley, David Feise, Greg Coomer, Corey Peters, Erik Wolpaw, Tristan Reidford, Chris Remo, Jake Rodkin, and Kaci Aitchison Boyle. We are a mix of designers, programmers, animators, sound designers, and artists on the game. We'll be taking your questions for an hour starting at around 9:00 am pacific time.

Note that while you can ask us anything, any questions you have about Half-Life story spoilers will be handed over to Erik Wolpaw, who will lie to you.

    Proof it's us: https://imgur.com/ETeHrpx

Edit: Thanks everyone! The team is heading back to our desks to work towards shipping the game but we've really enjoyed this and hope you did as well.

What were the significant things learned about Half Life: Alyx in the Valve AMA?

    Posted: 22 Jan 2020 11:25 AM PST

For those of us who don't want to sift through (at the time of posting) 4000+ comments, what where the major things we learned from the AMA?

    I just wanted to say...

    Posted: 22 Jan 2020 06:21 PM PST

How cool is it that after all this time, the waiting, the speculating, the want for more, we are finally getting all that we have wanted for years. So much information has been given by the Devs and I just find it so damn cool. I hope you are all as happy as I am right now.

7 Hour War Begins. Advisors rip through the architecture of Eastern Europe in a brutal attack that wipes out the city

Valve please store ammo on a belt for HL:Alyx

    Posted: 22 Jan 2020 08:20 PM PST

From the AMA "We have an 'over the shoulder' contextual inventory system for ammo"

This is going to get tiring having to reach over your shoulder every time you need to reload. Plus it simply doesn't make sense for ammo clips to be stored over your shoulder, they should be stored on a belt or chest pocket for easy access, at least as an option to choose from.

This works fine in VR even without a player body, titles like Arizona Sunshine use a floating ammo belt system.

What is happening in the rest of the world during Half-life 2 events?

    Posted: 22 Jan 2020 11:42 AM PST

We know that Half-life 2 is happening in eastern europe. Correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as we know, the Citadel in city 17 is the only one on Earth and Combine's main base of operation is there as well.

What's happening in Americas, Asia and Australia? Are these areas basically giant wastelands with remnants of humanity and aliens duking it out with an occassional Combine patrol here and there?

Odyssey plus at $229. Imo this is a great product to experience HL:A for that price

    Posted: 22 Jan 2020 09:00 PM PST

Did anybody ask about how long HL:A is?

    Posted: 22 Jan 2020 04:02 PM PST

I've yet to see a VR game with a singleplayer campain that is longer than 4h, I wonder if Alyx's going to shake this aspect of VR up a bit, or not.

Half-Life Preliminary Findings (Trailers, Interviews, Pictures from 1997)

Valve is likely exaggerating Laidlaw's involvement.

    Posted: 22 Jan 2020 10:24 PM PST

From his Twitter: "People on this team are like family so if they think I've been generous, I'm glad! But I know only what everybody else who has seen the trailer knows about the game. I never wanted to know any details. Just want to be another fan, coming to it cold."

This seems subtly to not-so-subtly suggestive to me that he's not quite eye-to-eye with Valve, at least in terms of what they've implied re: his degree of involvement. Their AMA answer gives you the impression image of extensive email interactions.

I could easily be wrong of course.

Edit: He's expressed in the same Twitter thread his distaste re: speculating on the behind-the-scenes la-di-da's of the devs involved (anything aside from the meaning of the game, etc). Also, obviously some level of loyalty is there. So I don't think he would throw them under the bus by saying they lied or exaggerated more explicitly than something like this.
