Half-Life Source's HD Models are fanmade

    Posted: 18 Feb 2020 05:04 PM PST

You might know Half-Life: Source. Well today, I'll tell the story of how I made it worse.

The story begins in 2013, as Valve begins porting the Half-Life 2 branch of Source to SteamPipe. In their announcement, they posted a link to their GitHub Issue tracker. Naturally, I wanted to help out any way I could.

So I suggested to Valve's Alfred Reynolds that they implement the HD pack. After all, the GoldSrc version had implemented that option in its SteamPipe update.

To make things a little easier, I linked to a fanmade port of the pack on GameBanana.

Alfred asked no questions and immediately threw the thing into the Beta branch of the game a few days later. The artist's name is in this single Steam announcement and nowhere else.

This pack included a completely fanmade set of world textures. Half-Life Source came preinstalled with a GameBanana texture pack for a week until I told him. They pulled the world textures and left everything else. That was the end of the conversation for the HD pack.

    So where do we stand?

Well, I can tell you that as of 2020, Half-Life Source is still using fanmade textures instead of the official Gearbox content. I installed it tonight and that fanmade HEV arm texture is still there, artist's signature intact.

I reached out to Valve on the same GitHub tracker last year to no avail. Hopefully we can get Valve to fix this eventually now that they're more talkative to the community, but I doubt HLS is any kind of priority to anyone, even now that it's free.

In closing: Valve has been using GameBanana content for the last seven years. Stone, if you're reading this, I'm sorry.

Interactivity with Water in HL: Alyx/Source 2

Interactivity with Water in HL: Alyx/Source 2

I apologize in advance if this already got mentioned but I was looking through stuff and noticed that this prop (the cardboard piece) was laying halfway in a puddle of water.

Although this seems laughably insignificant, I was wondering if we will be able to pick objects up and dip them and drop them in water puddles, how the water would react,if they would stay wet, make water sounds etc.I think it's interesting to speculate how the Source 2 Engine will handle those water effects...

    Your thoughts?
