    What did the "Friends" tab do in Half-Life 2?

    Back when I was into piracy, it was very hard to avoid getting a non-compressed or virus filled HL2, at least for me. Many of the wrong copies I found included many things like missing voice files, lost textures, serious bugs, conditional achievements and one of the strangests features i've ever seen on a Half-Life game (aside from HL1 multiplayer maybe), the "Friends" tab in the main menu. I never played HL2 in the original Steam game since a few weeks ago during the Summer Sale, where I decided to step off of piracy and become a better man, by paying rightfully for my digital property, and until then I thought that the "Friends" feature was exclusive to the Steam edition, for obvious reasons, and the fact that when I tried to use the feature in the pirate editions, it just did nothing. But to my surprise, the Steam edition did not have such feature, and I have no idea what edition currently includes it and somehow works, and what does it do then. I used to toy around with the files of those games quite often and I found between the sound files a folder named "friends". I checked it and there were 2 sound files. One named "error", which was a clip of Dr. Kleiner saying "Oh fiddlesticks, what now?", I easily imagine Valve using this as either a placeholder or a humorous way to show an error, in the case that the option was official, and the second file was named "ping", and it was, indeed, a high-pitched ping noise, although not very loud in that matter. Has anyone seen this feature in this game before or have any information about it? I'd aprecciate it quite a lot, and it would be nice to share some trivia and knowledge in the community like that

    when you meet the vortigaunt grab one of the crab hearts and press the button that activates grenades. If you did it right you should get the achievement
