let's be real- half life is a modern epic. we are graced by its existence. (aside- how it should end)

the combine are colonizers, imperial rulers. the nihilanth was the first time a powerful telepathic force from xen attacked humanity. but we have to remember that the event that triggered the collapse of human freedom and prosperity was a response, not an aberrant attack. we first opened the portal and invaded xen. on xen we didn't enforce the rules of our domain of course, but we began an assault on the wellbeing of that world. we collected specimens, tested weapons on its organisms. the nihilanth of course was a power hungry being, enslaving the vortigaunt and militarizing clones to insert it's will, but it's attack on humanity was a response to the beginning of human multidimensional imperialism. while fumbling around in the dark, trying to expand our reach beyond our own dimensions, we simply stumbled upon beings more powerful than us (among other things- the parasites of another dimension, a different organic ecosystem with organisms (such as the gonarch, the headcrabs, the antlions, etc ), with capabilities that we were not prepared for). we made the first strike, and we just happened to finally come across someone stronger and smarter than us. in the words of sergeant major avery johnson- "crazy fool, why do you always jump. one of these days, you're gonna land on something as stubborn as you are. and i don't do bits and pieces." in the end, the most likely outcome will be the extinction of human control. the combine and it's rulers are more powerful than we are, and we will not stop them.

Just finished my first ever play through of Half Life 2 and I was wondering, what the hell are these things???

    So I was pondering...

Are things like Striders, Gunships, and Dropships machines built by the combine or are they xen creatures that the combine have taken over and implanted cybernetics into them?

Why does Black Mesa have the exact same weapons that the HECU has?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 08:12 PM PST

I know that the real explanation is for gameplay purposes, but what would an in-universe explanation be? The HECU's PCV is pretty similar to the HEV, and it even uses the same charger. Is this and the whole same weapons thing supposed to imply that Black Mesa supplies the HECU with their or something? And another thing, the Black Ops in Opposing Force use the same weapons and vehicles the grunts use. In the game, an assassin complains to his friend about having to "clean up a mess the grunts can't handle". Does you think this implies the Black Ops are connected to the HECU or something? If they weren't, why would the assassin say "the grunts" instead of "the HECU"?
