    half life 2 ending but something is wrong

    Black Mesa Theory

    I've been playing Black mesa and Half life 2 over the past year or so and I have a few theories based on the narrative subtext, which is something the series is excels at.

    - Black Mesa is WAAY too big to have been built during the 90's. I think it's essentially been around in some form for 50 + years. I.E all the nuclear stuff could mean it was something started during WW2 and massively expanded during the cold war. Which jives well with real world history a lot, and real world US defence spending could account for that.

    - We know the G-Man isn't "human", and there's a good chance the government probably knows that as well. We also know Dr. Breen was part of the Black Mesa facility before getting hired by the combine and he was part of the peace negotiations with them after the 7 hour war. To me this could explain a few things about the "clean up operation" the army did to the black mesa personnel in the first game.

    -For one, the US government seems to trust Breen, due to the fact he was a member of the peace negotiations and he also manages to survive the black mesa incident a bit too easily. I think he was part of some "loyalist" faction that okayed the clean up. The "loyalist" faction of the team probably feared alien infiltration enough to cause genuine fear and suspicion in the facility and they were communicating that fear with the US government. And the portal disaster in the anomalous material facility could have caused enough panic to get the go ahead for the most extreme version clean up operation to begin. They might have been trying to stop some interdimensional invasion before it could really begin, using the harshest methods to be apsolutely sure.

    -And on the other end you have the lambda or "dissent" faction of the facilty. They are as advanced and high up as you can get. The work in a high fortified area of the facility, they control exploration into XEN and they've probably had some contact with the nihilanth as well (and the g-man as well in all due probability). They were well known to the point of being the "de-facto" leaders of the facilty and most security guards and scientists defer to them in moments of crisis. Which gave them the authority to guide gordon along the way to his success. This respect among the general personnel probably caused the "loyalist" faction to suspect almost everyone who worked in Black Mesa.

    -I also find it interesting that the lambda team had some kind of hasty contigency should the worst occur. They stood together in their fortified lab, they had a whole plan to dely military reinforcments using a missile to shoot down the satellite ect ect they were certainly aware a real military reprisal could occur. So I imagine there was a lot of conspiracy type stuff happening in black mesa previous to the events in the game, secret alliances and deals and so on.

    But that's just my theory and head-cannon! To sort of make sense out of a random and extreme plot twist lol.
