    1. Which Order Should I Play the Games In?

    1. Half-Life (Ignore Half-Life 1: Source. It's garbage)
    2. Half-Life Blue Shift (Standalone Expansion - Optional)
    3. Half-Life Opposing Force (Standalone Expansion - Optional)
    4. Half-Life 2
    5. Half-Life 2: Episode One
    6. Half-Life 2: Episode Two
    7. Black Mesa (Half-Life Remake - Highly Recommended)
    8. Half-Life: Alyx (Coming March 2020)

    2. Should I Mod Half-Life 2 Before Playing?

Although Half-Life 2 is plenty great without any modifications, I do recommend two mods that give the game some higher resolution textures and community bug-fixes that subtly improve the base game but remain faithful to the stock game.

    • Half-Life 2: Update A completely free and extensive community-developed update for Half-Life 2 featuring beautiful lighting, countless bug fixes, and a brand new Community Commentary Mode. With Half-Life 2: Update, there's never been a better time to revisit City 17.
    • Half-Life 2: MMod This mod drastically increases the visual fidelity, gameplay and AI while keeping completely lorefriendly! The animations, foley and visual design all synergise with each other brilliantly!

    3. Half-Life: Alyx Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have a question? Feel free to ask it, and somebody will try to answer it as much as possible.

    Will Half-Life: Alyx be VR-only?

Yes. Valve says the complex VR interactions do not translate well to keyboard and mouse. It is unknown if anyone will successfully mod Half-Life: Alyx to be playable without VR, but if they do, they are likely to prove Valve's point. Consider trying to play "Wii Sports" with a keyboard and mouse and you can get a better understanding of the issues translating input methods.

Will there be a non-VR mode released?

It is unknown if Valve or anyone from the community will successfully modify Half-Life: Alyx to be playable without VR, but if they do, they are likely to prove Valve's point. Consider trying to play "Wii Sports" with a keyboard and mouse and you can get a better understanding of the issues translating input methods.

Will Half-Life: Alyx require the Valve Index?

No! You Can Play Half-Life: Alyx with any SteamVR-compatible System Half-Life: Alyx supports a variety of play environments, locomotion methods, and input devices.

If you have VR hardware that works with a computer, then it works with SteamVR.

If you don't yet own any VR hardware, now's the time. Headsets support different sets of features, so the experience will vary between them. Half-Life: Alyx was built hand in hand with Valve Index, which is the highest fidelity option on the market, but the game works great with Vive, Rift and Windows Mixed Reality too. Check out the different options to choose which one is right for you.

    • Valve Index
    • HTC Vive
    • Oculus Rift
    • Windows Mixed Reality

Already own Valve Index? You'll get Half-Life: Alyx free.

Half-Life: Alyx will appear in your Steam Library March 2020. There's no need to enter a key or purchase the game. It'll appear in your Steam Library upon release, ready to play. No matter when you bought your gear Half-Life: Alyx is yours, whether you've had your Valve Index for a while, or are just about to take the plunge. …Or whether or not you have the whole VR kit: Owners of Valve Index controllers also get Half-Life: Alyx for free.

How long will Half-Life: Alyx be?

Half-Life: Alyx is a full-length game built from the ground up for virtual reality. It will be around the same length has Half-Life: 2.

When will Half-Life: Alyx be released?

Can we all take a moment to appreciate the fact that HL:A will be compatible with pretty much all VR systems?

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 08:31 AM PST

Valve totally could have made this game exclusive to their own VR system, like Oculus has with so many of their titles. Obviously it makes sense that Valve wouldn't do this, from a money making perspective, as they want to sell as many copies as possible. But still. They didn't even make the title exclusive for a set duration. When it's out, it's going to be compatible with all current VR tech, and I think that's pretty amazing.

Well, that wraps up Black Mesa. Final boss was tough as nails, but also really fun (Generous auto saves did make it better). On to Half Life 2 MMod then.

When did they add a VR mode to Half Life 2?

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 08:09 PM PST

When did they add a VR mode to Half Life 2?

I can't find any videos or news about this, but I just opened a fresh install of Half Life 2, and in the video settings there's a Virtual Reality Mode. I'm pretty sure this isn't a mod, I've never installed a HL2 mod before. Maybe it has to do with Garry's Mod? (cause I think I installed a VR mod for Gmod, but I never got it working) Love to hear about whats going on. (EDIT: added higher quality image)
UPDATE: I enabled it, and it said to restart the game to apply. I did so, but the game then launched in the VR Theater mode. Once the game loaded, there was a new option called "Enable Virtual Reality". when I selected it, the game crashed. I reloaded the game a couple more times after that and tried to select other tabs like Options, but the game kept crashing.

Absence of HL composer Kelly Bailey in Half-Life:Alyx

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 08:20 AM PST

Hey guys I want shere with you my fears about Half-Life Alyx . What I mean is that we know that the compser of HL and HL2 soundtrack Kelly Bailey left from Valve and we know that music take big role with seting mood in Half-Life games. When I heared first time trailer of HL A I knowed that someone else make this music. I hope Im wrong and Alyx will give us outstanding score like prevusly Half-Life games. PS which tracks are your fovorite ? My are Apprehension and Evasion , What Kind Of Hospital is this and Vortal Combat

What exactly about the Nihilanth's death caused the portal storms to attract the Combine?

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 12:49 PM PST

Does it have to do with the Nihilanth itself being an immensely powerful being and by killing it, the Nihilanth unwillingly released all the energy composed inside it in one big "cascade" (heh) of energy causing the portal storms? Makes sense since we do see all those energy strikes come out of it when we kill it.

Or was it because the Nihilanth was the only thing keeping that rift between Xen and Earth open or closed and so by killing it the way Gordon did, the Nihilanth is basically unable to keep the rift open and when it dies the rift becomes unstable since it has nothing regulating it and keeping it open and so the rift gets bigger and portal storms become more frequent.

Not a fan of the black mesa nihilanth design.

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 10:20 PM PST

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love what they did with the fight. It is a lot more fun. However, part of what made the nihilanth so creepy was the dark sunken eyes, something this redesign lacks.

I never watched this video before and I'd recommend it to you guys. I never knew so much about the Combine!
