Is there a reason why the G-Man appears so... sexy in Half Life: Alyx?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 07:24 PM PST

Jokes aside, I thought the G-Man appeared more attractive in the new trailer. Three major changes I noticed:

    • His eyebrows are now straight and sharp, as opposed to the arching eyebrows of former games.
    • His skin looks much more natural and human. You can tell he has blood underneath that skin, whereas in previous games his skin looked pale and rotten. His skin also appears clean and less wrinkly.
    • His hair is all fuzzy and hip, whereas in the previous games, it seemed gelled and professional (although that could be because of the low poly-count).

I was always under the impression that G-Man was either an alien creature, or a mysterious pseudo-human with alien abilities. That's why he looked so unnatural and creepy in Half Life 2 and the subsequent episodes, and it really worked for those games in my opinion.

But now in Half Life: Alyx, they made him look more human and good-looking, and I'm not sure why.

My theory is that G-Man in Half Life 1 looked just like he does in Half Life: Alyx, except you couldn't tell because of Half Life 1's low poly-count. But as he aged, his alien-like features began to show more prominently, hence why he looked so morbid in Half Life 2.

Regardless, that still doesn't explain why his eyebrows are straight. Any other theories?

[Repost] I calculated Gordon Freeman’s kill count across every Half-Life game.

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 05:20 AM PST

    [Original post removed for cross-posting.]

    TL;DR

I think Gordon Freeman is the most important protagonist in history, with the possible exceptions of Jesus and John Wick. I also think, given how Freeman has murdered more enemies than even John Wick, Freeman deserves an in-depth analysis of his body count across his career as a physicist-turned-mass-murderer. Spoiler: Dr Freeman has killed 1,349 hostiles since 1998.

Extraordinary claims demand extraordinary proof. Here are video counters documenting my effort to calculate Freeman's body count...

    Half-Life 2 (2004): 751 kills

    Episode One + Episode Two (2006 + 2007): 199 kills

    Black Mesa (2012): 399 kills

Even with video documentation, a project like this begs a lot of questions around methods and standards. I'll try to address them below.

Q: Why don't you kill every enemy in Ravenholm, Under the Radar, Surface Tension, etc.?

A: I played Freeman as an ammo-starved survivalist, not a psycho. If I could avoid combat by running past respawning enemies, running by slow enemies, or allowing overpowered sentry guns and Alyx to murder everyone, I did so.

Q: Do you count destroyed sentry guns as kills?

A: No, because you can only disable sentry guns, not kill them. If you upright a downed sentry gun, it'll continue working. If it's not sentient like a Barnacle or mobile like a Manhack, I don't count it as killable.

Q: How does your Half-Life 2 have ultra HD textures without using Cinematic Mod?

A: I actually used an amazing, underrated fork called Awakening: Origins, which retains the art style of Half-Life 2 whilst upscaling textures and particles. That's why Alyx, Barney, etc. look normal yet ultra-HD. I did, however, retain Vierheilig's Cinematic Combine models, since I like the authoritarian menace they lend to Freeman's enemies.

Q: Wait, why'd you play Black Mesa instead of Half-Life?

A: Black Mesa integrates more naturally with Half-Life 2, featuring cameos from Dr Kleiner and Dr Vance. Based on my recollection, the difference in body count between Black Mesa and Half-Life isn't massive. More importantly, if I spend 17 hours on playing and recording one game, I want the version that not only boasts immersive visuals, but also a realistic physics engine to animate every brutal headshot.

Q: What about Black Mesa missing Xen?

A: I replayed Xen from the original Half-Life and counted 82 kills. So if Xen matters to you, simply tack 82 more kills onto Freeman's confirmed body count of 1,349 kills (for a total of 1,431.)

Q: Can you update your kill count to include Xen someday?

A: If Black Mesa includes Xen in its entirety someday, I could do a revised kill count. Still, it depends on how many folks express interest in this current version.

Q: Can you do kill counts for Opposing Force or Alyx?

A: Eh, let's see how many folks enjoy this one first. These things take forever to document, analyse and edit.

Q: Can you do a kill count for Hunt Down The Freeman?

    A: No.

Well people willingly side with the combine in HL:A?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 06:45 PM PST

So from what we've seen, it's pretty safe to assume that a large theme of the game will be the combine cleaning up all the xen life that's accumulated from the portal storms.

Considering the damage that the portal storms did to earth by bringing all this xen life over, do you think people will accept the combines rule as a way to get rid of all that xenian life? By the time of hl2, the horrors of the combine might have become apparent, but earlier in their rule it would have been easy to think that it's a better alternative to the portal storms.

Gonarch boss fight is, if not the hardest, one of the most hard fights I have ever had in a shooter.

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 09:54 AM PST

Yesterday I had my first run on Xen in Black Mesa. Xen is looking GORGEOUS! The gameplay is excellent and the creepy elements on it (yep those zombies you know) are amazing. Everything went nice and smooth until I got to the Gonarch fight.

The first stage was reasonably hard. It took me several tries, but in the end I beat it. The lair was absolutely amazing, but the nightmare started after the second phase. It was super hard, and it killed me at least 40times before I was able to kill it (I play in hard).

Not complaining tho. It was an amazing experience, only comparable to beating bosses in Dark Souls. It reminded me a lot of the fight with Champion Gundyr in DS3 (infinite stamina, ultrafast movement, insane damage, superlong combos with no cooldown, punishing arena).

Well done Crowbar collective. You put an excellent challenge in BM, and I'm very happy with it.

What if the Combine/ Universal Union was beneficial to Earth?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 07:36 PM PST

I know this is a childish question, but what if the Combine were beneficial to the Earth's armies? Such as manufacturing striders for them, and so on. I think it would be cool if the Combine did this, but then HL2 would be boring. Anyways would like to see what you guys come up with.

Does anyone know if Black Mesa Xen will be modable by release?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 05:06 PM PST

On the Valve Developer Community page for Black Mesa,) it mentions that the SDK for the Black Mesa branch of the Source engine (which I assume to be the current version of Source the game uses, plus Crowbar Collective's additions, such as the Xengine lighting system) is planned to be released alongside the full game. I'm not sure how old this page is, and if these plans are still current with CC. Alternatively, is it already possible to mod the game, including with the new lighting system?

Is City 17 the only/last city?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 04:24 PM PST

Been curious about this since I was a kid, but the name "City 17" implies theres at least 16 more, and with the whole train sequence in the beginning, where did that train come from? The story makes it seem as if City 17 is the only city that allow the Combine major control over Earth. If not, shouldn't the resistance be worried about Combine forces from other locations? Is it never brought up?
