Analyzing the Half-Life: Alyx announcement trailer's dialogue Posted: 24 Jan 2020 06:31 PM PST Alright, so the main ones that stuck up to me the most were these. "All of this is my fault. I never told you. I couldn't, I'm so sorry, baby." "All of this is my fault": This means to me at least Eli blaming himself for not aborting the Xen crystal test which caused the resonance cascade and later led to the Combine noticing and enslaving Earth. So, he thinks that everything that is happening now with the Combine's presence on Earth and the Xen alien invasions, he thinks it's all his fault. He's already blamed himself for the Resonance Cascade in EP2. "I should have aborted that damn test, but I didn't. The whole world went to hell that day." "I never told you. I couldn't, I'm so sorry, baby.": This could maybe mean that Eli never told Alyx how she was "plucked" from Black Mesa by G-Man. Alyx most likely would have died if G-Man did not rescue her, so it could mean Eli now has some affairs with G-Man. "You will not save him. Alyx Vance ALONE cannot prevent his fate": This is absolutely in reference to Eli's eventual demise I think. I really hear the emphasis in "alone", so it could mean the Vorts saying, "if you want to save Eli from his demise, you will need help from a mutual friend" now I'm not so keen on the idea of time travel in Half-Life, but I'm sure Valve can think of something else or maybe a better way to execute it. I really do think we're gonna get some tie-in to Episode 2 and maybe even some closure. That way, we can actually get a new story arc with HL3. We still gotta see how the war between the Combine and Earth ends. [link] [comments]

Posted: 24 Jan 2020 04:01 PM PST It's going to feel very strange seeing Eli again in Half-Life Alyx. The only way I can explain this is it's like a family member that died, then years later someone makes an exact clone of them, doing the same things, acting exactly the same way as they did when they were alive, but it's just slightly off. On one hand, it's them, but then again, it's not really them. [link] [comments]

[HL:A Speculation] How do you think Valve will tie in the ending to Episode 2? Posted: 24 Jan 2020 10:07 AM PST So, obviously, in the HL:A trailer, we hear Eli and his dying words to "close your eyes, honey!" and in the press releases and official website for HL:A, we see Valve recommending that players go back and replay through Episode 2 directly before playing this game. To the surprise of no one, this I'm sure this has been discussed before but Reddit's search feature sucks, so I wanted to start a thread about it: How do you think it'll be done? My theory: The G-Man being able to flux time and change the way things are, and having personally chosen Alyx as an agent to protect in spite of his employers' objections--he wants Alyx to perform a task for him that can alter the course of time, and either save Eli in the future, or ensure his death occurs to spur some kind of greater-good (in his eyes) scenario. Why I think this: First of all, G-Man wouldn't be presented in the trailer with teaser-prominence if he weren't going to make some kind of appearance, and I believe this because Valve didn't make the trailer, Derek Lieu did. Lieu is a world-class trailer editor specializing in games. In his GDC talks about developing an effective trailer, he discusses his strategy is just to play the game as much as possible with different play styles, and just collect hours and hours of B-roll footage to comp together a trailer. This means that this had to have come from the gameplay; unless Valve supplied him with footage of the G-man emerging from the darkness, or unless he popped open the game editor himself--which, again, Valve would have to supply him with this--and scripted the sequence, the facial animation, and everything, something I think he'd see as a waste of time when the game itself has plenty of good sizzle-reel footage. Ergo, G-Man has to play a character role, meaning Alyx is almost assuredly aware of G-Man, and he's going to play a prominent role in either ensuring or undoing Eli's death. What this means for Gordon's future, and what it means for Half-Life as a franchise and storytelling medium is getting into wild speculation territory. [link] [comments]
